State's top players set to play for titles
Zeller, Thomas to put on show during finals
By Greg Jones
High school sports editor
Against the backdrop of Conseco Fieldouse, the stars will be coming out during the state basketball championship games Saturday.
Basketball fans will get a glimpse of some of the best talent the state has to offer, including two possible future Mr. Basketballs and some probable Indiana All-Stars.
Headlining those standouts will be Washington senior Tyler Zeller in the Class 3A title game against Harding, and Bishop Luers sophomore DeShaun Thomas in the 2A game against Winchester.

The 6-7 Thomas is averaging 29.8 points (second in the state to Zeller) and 12.5 rebounds for Luers, while also going over the 1,400-point career plateau.
His 1,404 points in two seasons puts him on track to break the Allen County boys basketball career scoring record of 1,823 (by former Elmhurst standout James Hardy) midway through his junior season.
He already holds the school record for boys all-time scoring, points in a game (48) and points in a season (738).
?(Thomas) is a great player, and he is certainly one of the top players in the state now,? Winchester coach Chip Mehaffey said.
?Before it is all said and done, he has the potential to be one of the state?s best players ever.?
In his past two postseason games (the regional finals and semistate), Thomas scored 48 and 35 points.

Offensive powers play for 2A title
Knights, Falcons in state's top 10 in scoring average
By Greg Jones
High school sports editor
The scorekeeper at Conseco Fieldhouse better be ready for the Class 2A state championship matchup between a pair of 23-3 teams, No. 3 Bishop Luers and No. 4 Winchester.
It?s shaping up to be a wild one.
Luers ranks seventh in the state in scoring average (73.3), while Winchester is eighth (73.2). The Knights have been over the 90-point plateau four times, and the Falcons three times but have gone over 100 points once (a 124-32 win).
Luers is led by 6-foot-7 sophomore Deshaun Thomas, who averages 29 points and 12 rebounds per game and has feasted on shorter teams like semistate victim No. 2 Westview and Winchester, which doesn?t have a player taller than 6-5.

After watching the video on the previous page, my initial comparison was a more talented/well rounded Bill Walker with slightly less athleticism.
Kids going to be a stud three for a long time.
Another thing I noticed was that he still seems a little awkward with his movements. I think if you put this kid on a weight training regiment and the sky's the limit.

Luers gets big assist from Thomas
By Pat McKee
Posted: March 23, 2008
DeShaun Thomas is known as an outstanding scorer and strong rebounder, but it was a pass that the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers sophomore made that proved pivotal Saturday.
In the final 90 seconds of a tie game, Thomas passed out of a double-team to Jake Kuhn, who dropped in a short jumper for his only points and the Knights posted a thrilling 69-67 victory over Winchester for the Class 2A boys basketball state championship Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.
The title was the first in program history for Luers (24-3) but capped a football-basketball double for the parochial Catholic school this academic year. Winchester (23-4) finished as 2A basketball runner-up for the second consecutive season.
"We have a lot of ballplayers on our team," said Thomas, a 6-7 standout who finished with a team-high 20 points to pace four players in double figures, including junior Lawrence Barnett with 18, freshman Evan Blackmon with 15 and junior Troy Amos with 13.
"It isn't just one player, and people don't know that sometimes. But I have faith in my teammates, and everybody made the plays we needed. Now we're champions, and it feels so great."

Thomas squelches rumors he's leaving
By Greg Jones
High school sports editor
INDIANAPOLIS ? Sophomore sensation Deshaun Thomas has heard the rumors that had him going to Oak Hill Academy or another prep school.
He dismisses such talk.
?I am staying at Luers,? said. ?We just made history. I am not going anywhere.
?I get tired of hearing those rumors, but I don?t pay a whole lot of attention to them.?

OSU Still Leads For Top Basketball Recruit Thomas........interview with DeShaun's high school coach. He states that tOSU is out in front and is not aware of any other schools Thomas may be considering. They are stressing to Thomas to focus on academics right now.
