Hollowell starting to get scholarship offers

Jeremy Hollowell left Bloomington on Tuesday night excited about his visit with Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean.
Hollowell, a 6-6 forward who will be a sophomore at Lawrence Central High School, said he might receive a scholarship offer in the near future.

"I felt good about (the visit)," Hollowell said. "(Crean) was a good guy, a very enthusiastic guy.

As Hollowell continues to grow, so does his reputation. He opened some eyes with his play as a freshman at Lawrence Central and again this spring with the 15-and-under Spiece Indy Stars, initiating an offer from Iowa.

Hollowell added another offer on a visit to Cincinnati on Monday and will have a chance to make a further impression beginning next week at the Hoosier Shootout at Warren Central, when college coaches are allowed to evaluate high school players.

"The sky's the limit if he works hard at it," said Chris Hawkins, his travel ball coach. "He could be as good as anyone in his class. He just has to have that aggressiveness and assertiveness."

College coaches like Hollowell's size and versatility. He's quick off the floor and able to score inside against bigger players. Hawkins said he could play anywhere from point guard to power forward in college, depending on how he develops, but said he needs to improve his ballhandling to play on the perimeter.

"He's the whole package," Hawkins said. "He'll need to get in the weight room and get stronger, though."

Hollowell has visited Ohio State and has plans to visit Penn State, Purdue and Tennessee. His list of offers is likely to grow by the end of the month. He said he's not eliminating any possibilities at this point. There's a chance that the college choice of Spiece Indy Stars teammate Ron Patterson could influence Hollowell's decision.

Patterson, a 6-3 guard from Broad Ripple, has offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier.

Several players on the Spiece Indy Stars 15-and-under team have taken to Twitter and have quickly developed a following. Jeremy Hollowell, a 6-6 sophomore-to-be from Lawrence Central, had 222 followers as of Thursday.
Spiece teammates Austin Burgett, Ron Patterson and Kellon Thomas all have accounts, as does coach Chris Hawkins.
"A lot of the college coaches are on there," Hollowell said. "I like having it on my phone because I can do it anywhere."
Hollowell took a visit to Indiana University earlier this month and has an unofficial visit to Purdue scheduled for Aug. 1. He previously had scholarship offers from Cincinnati and Iowa, and on Thursday Illinois, Tennessee, Ohio State and Xavier offered, said Hawkins.

At coach's request, Oden calls Lawrence Central's Hollowell with tips on dealing with recruiting crush

Lawrence Central High School basketball coach J.R. Shelt hoped a phone call from an NBA player would lend a little perspective to one of his prized players, sophomore Jeremy Hollowell. Though the two had never before spoken, Hollowell said his conversation with former Lawrence North standout and current Portland Trail Blazer Greg Oden was productive.

"He talked about how crazy the recruiting process can be and how you can't stress out about it," Hollowell said. "He said I'm so young that I need to take it slow. It means a lot. He really gave me some helpful advice."

Shelt was an assistant coach at Lawrence North when Oden led the Wildcats to three straight Class 4A championships from 2004-06. He said he reached out to Oden because he saw how well he handled the recruiting crush in high school and felt Hollowell might be feeling some pressure.

A 6-6 forward, Hollowell said he picked up several offers this summer, including Cincinnati, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio State, Tennessee and Xavier, and is being recruited by Indiana and Purdue, among a number of other schools.
"I'm worried a little bit because Jeremy is 15 years old and everybody is putting him on a pedestal right now," Shelt said. "I think he's struggling a bit with the pressure and ego and overconfidence. It's just a lot to deal with and you're expected to act like an adult when you're not."

Shelt said the objective of reaching out to Oden was to stress the importance of "staying above" some of the things that can happen to top prospects.

"It can be overwhelming," Shelt said. "Greg and (high school teammate and fellow NBA player) Mike Conley did a great job of circling the wagons and not letting just anyone into their life. Not everybody is out for your best interests. I just want to make sure Jeremy stays on track in this process."
