With the start of the Fifa Soccer World Cup now just around the corner I feel its worthwhile taking a look at the U.S team and their chances at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The Star: Landon Donovan. The undisputed star of the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team. With 121 national games, 42 goals and as many assists he is leading the rankings in the current squad. Whilst he may have failed in early 2009 at the German FC Bayern, a year later he was a sensation at English club Everton. Donovan can play in the offence and in the midfield, under Bradley he mostly plays in the right midfield. If there is a single player who would make for good world cup betting Donovan would him.
The trainer: Bob Bradley. Coach of the USA since December 2006. Bradley took over the office of his mentor, Bruce Arena. His brother Scott played baseball for the Seattle Mariners in the 80's. Bob's son Michael is in the 23-man squad for South Africa. Bradley has had to cope with some setbacks in the runup to the World Cup. Charlie Davies is out of the World Cup because of the aftermath of a car accident. Stuart Holden, Ricardo Clark and Oguchi Onyewu were out due to long injury periods and Jozy Altitdore was banned by Hull City due to an assault.
The Captain: Carlos Bocanegra. The defensive player of Stade Rennes belongs has been part of the national team since 2003. He has played in 77 national matches and his 12 goals, most of which were headers, are impressive considering he's a defender. In the air Bocanegra is hard to defeat but on the ground he at times seems to be lacking a little. The 31-year-old together with Donovan is expected to lead the team through the knock-out stages.
The player to watch: Ricardo Clark. An American with Caribbean roots who lives in Frankfurt, Germany. As of January, Ricardo Clark is playing for German club Eintracht Frankfur and has gathered a good amount of experience during the last season. Clark describes himself as "tough, aggressive player." In the States the midfielder is called Rambo. Due to an assault he was once banned for nine matches. Clark can however also perform. He is fast, durable and has a strong, target-true shot. Bob Bradley hasn't yet decided on his four-man midfield but Clark has good odds to be included.
The Forecast: The real danger in Group C is England and it is unlikely the U.S will manage to beat them. That aside though the odds for victory against Algeria and Slovenia look a lot better. As long as the team doesn't take a loss to England in the opening game too much to heart and follows up decisively in the other two matches then progression out of Group C should be secured.
