I went to the game today and got to watch Nick play. He had a great game. I sat behind a Michigan fan at the game. Boy it feels good to be able to talk smack to them. He said he keeps praying Cooper will come back and Coach.

Mangold could move into NFL's first round

By Doug Harris
Dayton Daily News

Ohio State is expected to have at least three players taken in the first round of the NFL draft in April, and center Nick Mangold is doing his best to beef up that number.

The second-team All-Big Ten pick received rave reviews at the Senior Bowl last month, surprising scouts with his mobility and power.

Draft experts Jerry Jones and Mel Kiper Jr. are among those who consider Mangold the top center available, rating him ahead of Minnesota All-American Greg Eslinger.

"I appreciate it whenever anyone says I've done well or I'm moving up," said Mangold, who is preparing for the NFL Combine, which begins Feb. 22. "Hopefully, that helps in the draft — because none of those guys are doing any picking."

Jones, who has published the Drugstore List of draft projections for 29 years, believes Mangold will be a first-round choice.

"He's a leader-type kid," Jones said. "He's very thorough. He understands the game. He's got good instincts. And he's a technician.

"He's a good run-blocker and is developing into a good pass protector, and at (ground-oriented) Ohio State, that's not an easy thing to do."

In its Senior Bowl summary, The Sporting News said Mangold "has the talent to start as a rookie."

OSU linebacker A.J. Hawk and receiver Santonio Holmes are considered sure first-rounders, while cornerback Ashton Youboty and linebacker Bobby Carpenter also could be among the top 32 picks.

Miami (Fla.) set the record for first-rounders from one school with six in 2004. The Hurricanes also had five in 2002, matching the previous mark set by Southern Cal in 1968.

The Buckeyes' best showing came in 1971 when Tim Anderson, John Brockington, Leo Hayden and Jack Tatum were chosen in the opening round.

I would love to see him there when the Steelers pick at #32. With Hartings most likely done, Nick would be a great pickup!

It is sounding more and more based on comments I have seen that the Bengals might take a look at him in the first round to.

Interview with Nick Mangold from NFL Combine

By Chick Ludwig
Dayton Daily News
Here's a transcript of media interview with Ohio State center Nick Mangold of Alter High School at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Thursday:

Measured 6-3 1/2, 300 pounds
Agent: Joe Flannigan
How was your Senior Bowl experience?
Had a blast. I was real busy. They kept us busy, which was a good thing. Had a ton of fun. Loved the guys I was down there with. Had a blast.
Do you think you improved yourself?
I hope so. The goal was to go down there and be the best I could be. And I think I did pretty well going through the drills and everything. I had a lot of fun. So if I'm having fun I must be doing something right. I had a good time with it.
How are you dealing with the draft process right now?
Just going along through the stages. Down here in Indy, the Combine, you grow up and hear about it, you never really think it's going to happen. Now I'm here. It's crazy. But I'm loving it, having a blast. I'm just trying to have as much fun as I possibly can.
You've had a lot of college teammates go through this. Is there anything they told you to prepare you for this?
Yeah, I talked to Alex Stepanivich a lot, tried to get a feel for what was going to go on. He helped me out a lot, told me what to expect coming in. But no matter what people say to you, it's still a crazy experience.
What are your expectations of the draft?
My expectations are to hopefully get picked up. After that, I'm not really too worried about it. I want the opportunity to keep playing and be the best that I can be. I'm trying to be the best center in the draft. Hopefully I can prove that as we go finish through this combine.
Ohio State, USC and Texas are kind of dominating this draft at the top. Has there been any talk among you Ohio State guys about being the leader for first-round picks this year?
No, we haven't really talked about it. I know our guys aren't worried about it. They're all in the same position: They just want to keep playing. You can definitely ask A.J. He'll say the same thing. He's not worried if he's going to go top 10, top 15, whatever. He just wants to be able to play for another year. And that's how we're all approaching it. Afterwards, we'll see how things turned out and then celebrate if necessary.
What are some of the things you think the scouts want to see from you?
They want to confirm what I did down at the Senior Bowl. They want to make sure I'm not a big ol' fat slob and can move a little bit. And I think they're looking for some speed out of me. Hopefully I can show that to them.
How much did your (high school) wrestling background help you out in college?
Helped me out a ton. It taught me a lot about balance and a lot about countering other guys' moves. And I think that's been a huge bonus for me that I had that background instead of a basketball background. I don't think that helped too much.
Stepanovich had that background, too.
Yes, he did. I picked up a lot more techniques from him with respect to football. I had my own wrestling background. He applied it to football and showed me how to apply it to football. It's helped out tremendously.
Did you get to state?
I didn't. I got to districts my junior year and my senior year I stopped halfway through. I didn't want to hurt myself going into Ohio State.
When he came back, were you surprised he moved to guard?
I was. I expected him to go back to center. Just because you know if you get injured at a position you don't lose it. There could have been some animosity to begin with, but he was real great about it. He could have been a lot worse. We talked about it. We're all happy, and things worked out for the best. You could get an idea that there was going to be tension, that it had the opportunity to have tension, but it worked out that he was great with it and our guys knew it wasn't any of the players' fault. It didn't hold in the locker room.
Have you talked to many NFL teams yet?
Just trying to talk to as many people as I can. Haven't really kept a list or anything going. Just doing as much as possible.
Any team, since the Senior Bowl, showed more interest than others?
Not really. Kinda the same thing. The initial questionnaires, getting all that stuff done. Just so that way when we talk, we'll be more in depth as we get there.
Who was the toughest guy you went against?
I'd say Gabe Watson from Michigan. He's got a lot of size, but he moves real quick, which is a bonus for him and hopefully should help him out a lot at the Combine.
Are you going to do the entire workout?
Yeah, I am. Everything and anything.
Do you think Senior Bowl week is more important than this Combine and how pros look at you?
I have no idea. I'd like to know. I wish they'd tell us. But I'm going at it the same as I went with the team down there. Wanted to do the best that I could. Come here, want to do the best than I can here. And let the numbers, let them figure out if that's good enough.
A lot of people choose not to work out here. Why are you going to work out?
Why not? I have a great opportunity to show off what I can do. A whole bunch of people are here watching. And [this is] a great place to do it.

Gotta love the modesty! I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing his name called in the first round. Another Buckeye to cheer for in the NFL! Early Congrats Nick!

Nick was just interviewed at the Combine on the NFL Network. He did 24 reps on the bench - a personal record. Ran the 40 in 5.05.

One of the hosts said Nick is the best C prospects he has seen in years.

Congratulations Nick!
