Got my gameplan ready and I'm going to record that Georgia/GA Southern game. It would be unbelievable if Southern could pull an upset, or at least give them a good game.

C'mon Antonio!

Ex-Buckeye eager to face Georgia
By: David Paschall
(Contact)

Antonio Henton made his college football debut last year in one of its grandest venues, throwing a 37-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to help Ohio State polish off Youngstown State, 38-6, before more than 105,000 at Ohio Stadium.

Henton will make another debut on another grand stage Saturday, but he is clearly the underdog this time around.

After going through spring practice at Ohio State, the 6-foot-2, 228-pound quarterback transferred to Georgia Southern, a Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) school much closer to his home in Fort Valley, Ga. Henton is sharing the first-team spot with Lee Chapple, and Eagles coach Chris Hatcher expects each to play against top-ranked Georgia before nearly 93,000 at Sanford Stadium.

?This is going to be really big, like one of the dreams you have when you are young,? Henton said. ?I didn?t go to any games at Georgia, but I practiced up there in high school before we played on the Georgia Dome turf in Atlanta.?

Henton signed with the Buckeyes in 2006 as Rivals.com?s No. 9 dual-threat quarterback, ranking behind Florida signee Tim Tebow and ahead of Kansas signee Todd Reesing. He was hoping to supplant current senior Todd Boeckman as Ohio State?s starter next season, but that plan was altered earlier this year when the Buckeyes signed Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor was rated by Rivals.com as the top overall prospect in the 2008 class.

?It was a situation where I was thinking even before going into spring ball that I could have the opportunity to come down here and play,? Henton said. ?It was nothing bad as far as why I left Ohio State. It was a great place, but I wanted to be back home with a decent chance of playing.?

Henton played in four games last season as a redshirt freshman, completing 3 of 6 passes for 57 yards and the 37-yard score.

As a Peach County High senior in 2005, Henton threw for 2,117 yards and 30 touchdowns and was named the state?s offensive player of the year. He missed the first three games and Peach County lost all three, but his return ignited a 12-0 run to the Class AAA title.

?He?s a big guy who runs pretty good,? Hatcher said. ?He?s very mobile in the pocket and has a strong arm. He?s really improved each and every day and put himself in the position he?s in right now.?

It may be Saturday before Hatcher announces his starter. Chapple is a redshirt freshman, so neither has taken a snap for the Eagles.

Henton, however, has played sparingly before large audiences and is ready for his biggest game yet.

?We know they?re the No. 1 team, but we?ve got to play them like anybody else on our schedule,? he said. ?I think it can be done if we go out there and do all the right things and limit our mistakes. I think we can do it.?

Quarterback still a question mark for Georgia Southern
By Associated Press | Athens Banner-Herald | Story updated at 11:33 pm on 8/26/2008

STATESBORO ? Quarterback competition.

Lee Chapple and Antonio Henton probably didn?t know what the phrase meant coming out of their respective high schools.

Chapple started at quarterback for Greater Atlanta Christian since his sophomore season. Henton won the Peach County quarterbacking job midway through his junior year.

Differing collegiate tracks brought the two prep stars to Georgia Southern. Now, with Saturday?s season opener against Georgia in sight, they are neck and neck in competition to take the first snap.

?If we were at home, I?d have the stadium announcer introduce both of them as starters,? Hatcher said this week.

Four weeks of preseason practice haven?t settled anything. Chapple and Henton display spurts of good play, sometimes followed by head-scratching decisions.

According to ESPN's stats:

Henton went 10/18 for 102 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. He also had 9 "rushes" for 7 yards (can't find any info on how sacks affected that total).

The other QB also passed the ball 18 times, completed 9 for 86 yards (no TDs, no Int's).

There were several balls that Henton threw that were dropped, including a touchdown pass. Solid effort today by him!

Henton returns to field with Eagles

By Mike Brown - sports@macon.com

For Antonio Henton, it was his most meaningful action on a football field since leading Peach County to the state championship three years ago.
Henton did not start Saturday's game against Georgia, but the Georgia Southern sophomore - he transferred from Ohio State this summer - got into the game midway through the first quarter. He wound up playing well into the second half before giving way to redshirt freshman Lee Chapple, who started.

"I felt good, I felt confident," Henton said. "I was a little nervous on the bus coming up, but the closer we got, I started feeling fine. It feels good to be back in the groove. I wanted to keep the pace of the game going. We made some mistakes, but they are things you can correct and get better.

I just read that he had 34 yard TD pass. Way to go Antonio! Hope he has a great season.

Reality knocking

I just watched the replay on ESPN 360. It would not make many Buckeyes bitter that he transferred. I know he has not taken many meaningful college snaps. In addition, it is hard to play your first game against Georgia. With that said however, with 2 plus years in the OSU system I was hoping for more. I did not see it. Frankly I am not sure he will start at GSU an FCS team (albeit a good one).

The good:

He had one TD dropped in garbage time (less the 3 min to go) but on the next play threw a blooper that the receiver came down with ran in. The other 2 TDs from GS earlier in the game came off drives engineered by the other QB.

The bad:

With the game close he had a very bad pick in the endzone. He also should have had another pick but the safety just dropped the ball. He threw it down the middle to about 5 red jerseys.

It is sometimes hard to reset our expectations with a highly touted recruit but right now Henton is fighting for a job on an FCS team against an underclassman who is himself nothing special. That is where he is at. I wish him the best.

Henton gets nod at quarterback
By Mike Brown - sports@macon.com

The guess work as to who will be the starting quarterback for Georgia Southern today was settled early for Lee Chapple.

Chapple got the starting nod last week in the Eagles' 45-21 loss at Georgia, but going into the game, the redshirt freshman knew he would not be the starter tonight against Austin Peay.

Peach County product Antonio Henton, who came on midway through the first quarter when Chapple suffered a shoulder injury, will find himself in the starting role when the Eagles face the first of four straight home games at 6 p.m. today.

Georgia Southern will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak dating back to last season when it finished the year with losses to Furman and Colorado State.

As he did last week, head coach Chris Hatcher had not announced a starter, but Chapple had the inside scoop. And he had it a week ago.

"It wasn't a flip of the coin," Chapple said in the cramped visitor's interview room at Sanford Stadium minutes after the Eagles' loss to the Bulldogs. "Coach told us Friday that I would get the first snap, and then Antonio would rotate in. He told us Antonio would start the second game, and then after two games, (the starter) would be the guy with the hot hand."

Chapple completed 9-of-18 passes for 86 yards against the Bulldogs and scored Southern's first touchdown on a 1-yard run. Henton completed 10-of-18 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception in the end zone.

Henton sparks Ga. Southern in win over Austin Peay - NCAA Football - Yahoo! Sports

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP)?Quarterback Antonio Henton jump-started a sluggish Georgia Southern offense to lead the Eagles to a 34-20 win over Austin Peay on Saturday night.
Henton, a Fort Valley, Ga., sophomore who transferred to Georgia Southern from Ohio State this past summer, scored two touchdowns and passed for another in the fourth quarter to carry the Eagles (1-1) past the Governors (0-2).
Austin Peay led 20-13 after three quarters but turned the ball over on four consecutive series in the fourth period. The Eagles capitalized by scoring on three straight drives to break the game open.
The win enabled Georgia Southern to snap a three-game losing streak dating back to last season when it lost its final two games. The Eagles lost their opener last week to then-No. 1 Georgia, 45-21.
Georgia Southern jumped off to a 13-0 lead on 1-yard runs by freshman Adan Urbano and Leander Barney but couldn?t sustain the early momentum. The Governors tied it with 24 seconds left in the half when Garry Orr hit Lance Frederick with a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Austin Peay took the second-half kickoff and drove 67 yards to take a 20-13 lead on Orr?s 8-yard pass to Theo Townsend, only to see its offense collapse against a relentless Georgia Southern defense.
Henton, who played three quarters in the Eagles? rotating quarterback system, earned his team a 20-20 tie when he scored on a 4-yard run with 13:56 to play.
That score came on the first of three straight Governor fumbles. On its next series, Austin Peay turned over the football on its own 38. Six plays later Henton put Georgia Southern ahead for good with a 16-yard run.
The Governors then fumbled at their own 42, and Henton made them pay as he teamed with Darell Norman on a two-yard scoring pass to set the final score.
Henton had 103 of Georgia Southern?s 224 yards rushing, and completed 10-of-16 passes for 68 yards. Chris Covington, the Eagles? All America defensive back candidate, had 11 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble to lead the defensive effort.
Jeff Lyle had 86 yards rushing to lead the Governors while Orr completed 17-of-29 passes for 169 yards. Austin Peay had only 62 yards offense in the fourth quarter as the three turnovers proved to be too much to overcome.

Eagles' QB Henton doesn't mind sharing
Donald Heath | Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Georgia Southern quarterback Antonio Henton doesn't know if he's starting Saturday night against Northeastern.

So what?

If he knew, would he prepare any better? Would he try any harder in practice?

"I'm a team player and I've always been that way," the sophomore transfer said. "I'm just hoping to have a chance to play."

By design, he watched and waited against Georgia as Lee Chapple took the first snaps in the season opener. Henton started against Austin Peay in the Eagles' second game.

Until the fourth quarter against the Governors, little separated the play of the two quarterbacks. Henton directed a first-quarter touchdown drive. Chapple led a second-quarter touchdown drive.

But with GSU trailing entering the fourth quarter, Henton ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in a seven-minute span.

"He got in a groove, and we were able to win," GSU coach Chris Hatcher said. "He did some good things, and he made some mistakes at times."

The two quarterbacks appear to be equals in throwing, but Henton, 45 pounds heavier at 235, has shown an edge in scrambling when a play breaks down. And one defender isn't going to arm tackle him.

He's not exactly Jayson Foster, but Henton finished with runs of 18, 9, 11, 25 and 16 yards en route to a 103-yard night.

But he suffered a fumble and an interception.

"I'm fine with the way (Hatcher) is handling everything," Henton said. "When I first got here, I knew I'd start at the bottom of the depth chart... I think we're both doing well. We'll find out on Friday (who's starting). You just have to be ready when your number is called."
