Antiono Henton had a big game this weekend. Among the interesting philosophical what-ifs of this year's Ohio State team is what the offense would have looked like but for the questionable legal charges against Henton last year, which effectively eliminated him from the starting QB discussion. Imagine if Henton had won out the starting QB position, and the extra dimension that would have brought to the offense this season, with experience under his belt. Many of the board members here were excited about Henton's prospects at the beginning of last season, ranging from board novices (like me) to board experts (like osugrad21).

Thinking about what the arrest video that was leaked showed to have happened, or rather didn't happen, still [censored]es me off.

Antonio's big game:

Quote:
Antonio Henton scored five touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead Georgia Southern in a 34-27 win against Northeastern on Saturday night.

Henton accounted for 341 total yards, including two touchdowns and 298 yards on 16 of 27 passing for the Eagles (2-1). The sophomore quarterback also rushed for 43 yards and three touchdowns on 16 attempts.

Better excerpts from the local paper
:

Quote:
For the second straight week, it was the Antonio Henton show for the Georgia Southern Eagles."It was like old times (at Peach County)," said Henton, who scored on a 25-yard run on the second play of overtime Saturday night to give the Eagles a 34-27 win over Northeastern.

...
The Eagles got the ball first in the overtime, and after Andrews could not pull down Henton's pass in the end zone, the sophomore quarterback took matters into his own hands.

With running back Darell Norman sweeping to the left, Henton pulled the ball back and ran right. There was one player to beat, and he did that easily to score.

"It was a zone read play," Henton said. "When I saw the defensive end squeeze in I pulled the ball down and used my blockers.

"I've been taught since the first day I started playing football not to let one man bring you down, and I wasn't about to let that happen. I knew I could beat one guy. I was fortunate in that I was able to make the big play. I told the whole offense not to give up, and no one did."

Henton wound up with 43 yards rushing on 16 carries as he lost 27 yards in sacks, but he had two other rushing scores, and threw for three, completing 16-of-27 passes for 298 yards. It was the fifth highest single-game passing performance in school history.

Henton new breed of GSU QB
Adam Van Brimmer (column) | Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at 12:30 am

STATESBORO - Labels go with the quarterback position at Georgia Southern.
Runner. Option master. Gamebreaker. The equipment guy might as well have sewn those tags on the back of the uniforms instead of those that read Ham, Gross, Hill and Foster.
The new guy is more, well, generic.
Heck, coach Chris Hatcher won't even call Antonio Henton his starter.
Yet two games into the Henton era, we know he deserves at least one label.
Leader.
The Eagles are 2-0 against Division I-AA competition because of Henton. He rallied them from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Austin Peay and Northeastern, both times in improbable fashion.
Against Austin Peay, he lumbered for two touchdowns late and finished with 103 yards rushing overall. Mighty impressive from a 230-pounder whose 40 time does not deserve a decimal point.
Against Northeastern, he threw for 298 yards, including 65 yards on a touchdown pass that forced overtime with a minute left. Quite baffling from a passer whose accuracy reminds you of Shaq's at the free-throw line.
"He's not fancy or flashy," teammate Chris Covington said of Henton. "He just gets it done."

He should've transferred to GA Tech. He could've spent a year learning Paul Johnson's triple option and then won the ACC next year. I'm happy he's doing well, but he's doing it against fourth graders. You're better than that, Antonio.

Antonio Henton Named SoCon Player of the Week
Sophomore quarterback earns first-ever Offensive honor

STATESBORO, Ga. - Antonio Henton (Fort Valley/Peach County) earned his first-ever Southern Conference weekly award as he was named 'Offensive Player of the Week' on Monday (Sept. 15). Georgia Southern's sophomore quarterback helped orchestrate a 34-27 overtime win last weekend over Northeastern.
Henton accounted for all five touchdowns (career-highs of three rushing and two passing) in the Eagles' (2-1 overall) first overtime win since defeating the Huskies to start the 2005 campaign. It was also Chris Hatcher's first-ever OT win in six attempts during his nine years as a head coach.
The sophomore quarterback completed 16-of-27 passes for 298 yards, the fifth-highest passing yardage total in program history. He also registered 43 rushing yards.
Henton threw a 65-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining in regulation to tie the game, then on the second play in overtime recorded a 25-yard touchdown run that proved to be the game-winner.
He now leads the SoCon and is tied for sixth nationally in points responsible for (18.0 ppg). He is 29th nationally in passing efficiency (138.54), 39th in total offense (207.0) and 21st in scoring (10 ppg).

Henton was 4-10, for 56 yards and a rushing TD.

CHAPPLE'S SHOW
Henton, the Ohio State transfer, was starting his third straight game but was replaced in the first quarter by second-year freshman Lee Chapple. He sparked the Eagles to a score on his first series, tossing his first career touchdown on a 35-yarder to Tim Camp. The quarterbacks ended up splitting the snaps.

Eagles' QB rotation continues

By Donald Heath
Created 2008-09-29 23:30
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern's quarterback carousel cranked back up Saturday night.
Red-shirt freshman Lee Chapple returned to the rotation with Antonio Henton, who had played all but one possession in games against Northeastern and Elon.
Chapple responded by completing 15 of 22 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns against Wofford.
Henton was a pedestrian 4 of 10 for 56 yards, but added 61 yards on the ground.
Both could play in GSU's upcoming game against Chattanooga on Saturday.
"(Chapple) had as good a week of practice as he has had since he's been here," said Eagles coach Chris Hatcher during his weekly press conference Monday. "Whoever practices the best earns the right to play on Saturday, and that was the reason he got some playing time."
Henton had been playing better when it counted the most, however. The Ohio State transfer threw for 298 and 232 yards in two previous games against Northeastern and Elon.
GSU's two-quarterback rotation, with the help of a 45-yard halfback pass by Leander Barney, provided more aerial production.
The Eagles finished the Wofford game with 303 passing yards - believed to be the second-most passing yards by GSU in a game in 22 years.
Eagles quarterback Travis Clark threw for 375 yards against Elon in 2006.
"It really worked out," said Hatcher about the usage of Chapple and Henton against Wofford. "We had a good flow going... We have two guys there who are really good. (Henton) doesn't have as good a knowledge of the offense, but he can do a lot of things with his legs and make big plays, whereas if Chapple has time to throw the ball, he can pick you apart... We'll go with whoever gives us the best chance to win."

OFFENSE - B-plus
Quarterback
Ohio State transfer Antonio Henton has shown rapid improvement while starting the last five games. While GSU doesn't always display the offensive firepower of yesteryear, the Eagles are averaging 33 points a game.
Henton leads the team in rushing with 348 yards, and his 933 yards through the air are on pace for the fourth best single-season passing mark in school history.
"He's not overly fast, but what he has is a very good feel for running, and he's strong and can break tackles and he's developing a nice touch on his throws," said GSU offensive coordinator Rance Gillespie, who also coached Henton at Peach County High School. "What you're seeing now is what we saw at Peach County."

His 15-yard scoring strike to Michael McIntosh put GSU ahead 34-31 with 9:46 left. The Eagles led 10-7, 20-14 at halftime and 27-24.

PASSING-ASU, Edwards 12-22-0-176, Hillary 0-1-0-0. GSU, Henton 16-38-2-292, Barney 0-1-0-0, Hall 0-1-0-0.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- Georgia Southern played 50 minutes of its ugliest football on Saturday.
Then, everything came into bloom for the young Eagles. From the bleakest scenario, Georgia Southern rallied. Seven turnovers didn't stop it. Nor did the 137 penalty yards.
The Eagles never gave up. They overcame a 28-point deficit in the final 10 minutes, 43 seconds to defeat Western Carolina 38-31 in overtime.

Henton continues to improve

By Mike Brown - sports@macon.com

STATESBORO -- When Antonio Henton transferred to Georgia Southern from Ohio State this past summer he became one of the most high profile players to ever enroll at Georgia Southern.
He was player of the year at Peach County after leading it to a state championship. The fact he was then recruited by Ohio State was a testament to his ability.

I don't care that it's against I-AA teams - Henton is a gamer. He's got some Troy-esque arm strength and runs a LOT like Troy, too.

As this is his sophomore (redshirt in 2006) year of eligibility; it will be interesting to follow his career the next two years. I really hope he does well.
