Henton?s future with Eagles unclear
By Mike Brown - sports@macon.com
STATESBORO ? In early January the rumor mill had Antonio Henton leaving Georgia Southern, possibly transferring to Albany State.
But that talk slowed when the former Peach County quarterback enrolled for the second semester at Georgia Southern and began participating in winter conditioning drills.
Henton remaining at Georgia Southern gained additional credence on National Signing Day when Eagles head coach Chris Hatcher was discussing quarterback signee Brent Osborn.
The Valley, Ala., product was the only quarterback signed by the Eagles, and Hatcher described it as an ideal situation for Osborn who, ?could come in and spend two years learning the offense and take over when (Lee) Chapple and Henton finished up.?
The talk of Henton transferring, however, returned last week.
This time there appears to be some validity to the possibility of Henton leaving Georgia Southern, where he set five single-season school records last fall as a sophomore.
While Hatcher could not comment on Henton?s situation specifically, his words indicated something may be in the works.
?There?s nothing I can say at this time,? Hatcher said Friday evening. ?I was out of town until Thursday, and he went home for the weekend to talk to his momma.
?I have not sat face-to-face with Antonio. I will sit with him on Monday.?
Recruited by Ohio State after leading Peach County to the GHSA Class AAA state championship in 2005, Henton was redshirted and played sparingly as a freshman. He was suspended midway through the 2007 season by Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel because of a legal issue before transferring to Georgia Southern last summer.
Henton?s presence with the Eagles was met with great anticipation as he was being reunited with his high school head coach, Rance Gillespie, who is the Eagles? offensive coordinator.
At the time Henton, said he was looking forward to playing for Hatcher, who he first met when he was in the eighth grade.
