COLUMBUS ? Ohio State sophomore tailback Chris Wells had two messages to deliver at the Buckeyes football media day on Thursday.
One was for the media. The other was for whoever cared to listen.
First, he told the media that he prefers to be called by his childhood nickname ?Beanie,? rather than his given name.
And, more importantly, he passed the word that he wants to get the ball and he wants to get it often.
He wasn?t overt in expressing his desire to carry the offensive load in the running game. But he wanted to make it clear he is ready to do just that.
?The day after the season was over, I was in the weight room, preparing myself to take over the load,? the 6-2, 230-pound sophomore said.
?I just wasn?t in shape like I wanted to be last year. Probably I didn?t know what the college game demanded. Coming from high school to college is a big transition,? he said.

Consider:

• There is a bigger gap between the #1 and #2 tailbacks than there has been in quite some time. He'll get a lot of carries.
• The potential of this O-Line is huge. Beanie will get credit for their dominance.
• The o-line/beanie train will build up a huge head of steam over the first 8 games:
  • YSU: Lots of highlights but not big numbers (except YPC)
  • Akron: Ditto
  • Washington: A big name opponent, but not a great rush defense
  • Northwestern: 1st game with the students in town!
  • Minnesota: Indoor house party for the offense
  • Purdue: Could be a shoot-out
  • Kent State: More YPC and highlights
  • Michigan State: Homecoming
• Finally, this is THE Ohio State University. The school where the tailback has historically been called "The Lighthouse". When tOSU has a "Lighthouse", the college football world pays attention.

Whether or not Beanie runs himself into the hunt for this year's Heisman, if he remains healthy then he will absolutely be the man to beat in '08.
