Gary was right on a lot of things last year, most notably Rory Nicole. But he also was very wrong at other times. I loved that how cocky he was about Davis commiting. He was fooled big time!!! So were a lot of people. But I do appreciate his cander. He'll tell you what he thinks and that's more than most other "Insiders."

All kidding aside I think Gary gives the information he has but as everyone who follows recruiting knows, kids change their minds.

According to Gary's article today on BNs. Looks like Chris Wells will be hard to get from scUM. His childhood favorite was scUM and his cousin played for them.

I definitely see another DJ Williams in this kid, but if he stays at 6'2" then he's no taller than George. OSU's gonna have to pull out all the stops cause Garfield is so scattered on it's college commits.

Wells could be 6-4 240 by the time he graduates HS. MLB or DE is where I see him.
If he keeps his speed and demonstrates an ability to hit the hole why not give him a shot at RB? I personally would love it, but it is become more and more apparent that JT really loves smaller and fast backs.

I think he takes what he can get. If there is a big back that he feels can be a good rb, then he will go after him like MoC. Also wasn't Dru Humphries going to play rb here too?

I must just be a glass half full kind of guy because I didn't interpret Gary's interview with Wells as he was even a scUM lean. In fact, I felt the opposite. Chris seems to be playing things down the middle but I still feel that we get him.

I got the opposite from the article. In no means do I think he is a lock to scUM, but I do think they are his leader. I have heard that he said that Ohio players should stay in Ohio, but has anyone actually seen this quote in an article?

I would be beyond flabbergasted if anyone from Akron Garfield would ever consider scUM. Firestone Park is overwhelmingly Buckeye fans. Winfield and a number of his ex-OSU buds hold a very significant camp annually and I would imagine Wells has been to it so he's probably been influenced. If he's elite good, he'll go Buckeye.. if he's next tier he'll do MAC or Pitt.. Historically, that's just what Ram ballplayers do.

NJ, I hope to god you're right. Garfield, though, is famous for it's athletes going all over the country to play football. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of committment to one program there.

This sounds alot like the rumblings about Marcus Freeman when he was being recruited. Hopefully, this one ends up the same way. Too bad Jay Minton isn't Wells' coach!

BretGoBlue has scUM sympathies
There is a few notable differences between Freeman and Wells

Freeman admitted he liked Michigan more because they were showing him the most love. Wells is already getting plenty of love from both schools.

Freeman also grew up a Buckeye fan and the only reason people thought he grew up a Michigan fan was because of a misunderstanding down in San Antonio when some QB from Ohio told a newspaper reporter that Freeman, "loved," Michigan which ended up not even being true.

Chris Wells

</TD><TD noWrap width=3></TD><TD vAlign=top>Wells Could Be State's Top Prospect
By Bill Greene Ohio High Scout/Contributor
Date: Aug 23, 2004

Could Ohio's top player be a junior? It's not out of the realm of possibility as Akron Garfield running back Chris Wells, who already boasts offers from Akron, Michigan, and Ohio State, continues to look better and better. Bill Greene had a chance to chat with Wells and his mother Paulette during Friday's Garfield/GlenOak scrimmage.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
If you haven't seen <!--Default NodeId For Chris Wells is 1339455,2005-->Chris Wells run the football, make your plans to get to <!--Default For Akron is to ignore-->Akron now. The junior from Garfield high school is a special football player, but more importantly, Chris Wells is a special young man. For someone who just turned 16, Wells is a very mature young man and a joy to be around.

We caught up with Chris and mother, Paulette, at Friday's scrimmage with Canton GlenOak at Fawcett stadium. On the field, Wells had limited carries but electrified the crowd with a 70-yard touchdown run, outrunning the entire GlenOak secondary to the end zone. Off the field, Chris was articulate and humorous as we chatted about his career. When I jokingly demanded he tell me his college choice today so I could announce it to the world, Chris laughed and said, "Oh no, don't do that to me today."

Once the scrimmage began, I spent some time with Paulette Wells, Chris' mother. When I asked her if Chris was getting tired of people asking about his college plans, she replied, "No, not at all. We think it's exciting that people are interested in him."

When I asked her if there was one college she wanted Chris to select, she was quite adamant in her choice.

"I want him to go to <!--Default For Ohio State is to ignore-->Ohio State. It would be a lot closer to travel to see him, but I'm really not sure what he's going to do. I feel that <!--Default For Ohio is to ignore-->Ohio kids should go to school in Ohio, not leave the state."

After the scrimmage, I was able to chat with Chris about his future plans, but not before GlenOak star and future Buckeye, <!--Default NodeId For Brian Hartline is 1029392,2004-->Brian Hartline came over to congratulate Wells on his performance and tried to convince Wells to commit to Ohio State. We overheard Brian telling Chris "I want you down there with me. We need to play together." When Brian asked Chris what his top schools were, Chris replied, "Ohio State, <!--Default For Michigan is to ignore-->Michigan and <!--Default For UCLA is to ignore-->UCLA."

I asked Chris what his "official" height and weight are right now, and he said, "I'm 6' 1" and 220 pounds, as I've lost five pounds since camp started." When asked if he preferred playing offense, or defense, Chris said, "I really don't care. I like playing linebacker just as much as running the ball."

Finally, when I asked Chris when he was going to announce his college choice, he said, "I have no idea. It won't be soon."

Chris Wells is going to make some school very happy when he decides where he'll attend college. He is a top notch student and a leader on and off the field. He comes from a good family, and it shows in the way he conducts himself. Chris Wells just might be the best football player in Ohio, regardless of grade level. I've seen a lot of great football players in the past 40 years, but this one has a chance to be the greatest of all of them.

Chris Wells and <!--Default NodeId For Mike Hartline is 1435592,2005-->Mike Hartline, possibly Ohio's top two juniors

Having moved to the greater Akron area six years ago from Cleveland Heights, it would kill me if Chris choose scUM over the Bucks. Wasn't keith Byers a huge back? Chris, and Taz are 1A, and 1B on my wish list.
