you get turf toe when you tear the capsule that surrounds joint or the the actual joint itsself, which causes tremendous pain, a loss of stability, and increases the chances of dislocating the joint. it might sound like a 'no biggie' type of injury, but it's no joke. it can destroy a season. in researching it, i learned that the big toe can basically have force exerted upon it up to 8x the person's body weight. in Beanie's case, that means that the joint of his big toes have to be able to support nearly a ton of force when he's going all out.

USC game approaches and no word on Wells

Ohio State has a tight lid on information regarding the status of running back Chris "Beanie" Wells, who injured his foot Saturday.
Columbus -- Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells has had an MRI on his right foot. That is true, though an OSU spokesperson wasn't sure how conclusive the results were. X-rays on Wells' foot Saturday were negative, and he was wearing a protective boot while sitting out practice Monday. Those are two more facts, at least as presented by Ohio State.
Otherwise, facts have been in short supply. Today, when coach Jim Tressel holds his regular Tuesday news conference at noon, 70 hours after Wells hit the turf at Ohio Stadium and began writhing in pain, the Buckeyes coach should be prepared to talk some podiatry.
All that matters is whether, and how well, Ohio State's 1,600-yard rusher from a year ago can play against USC in 11 days. Let's all assume that Saturday's game against Ohio University is off the table. On the OSU depth chart released Monday, Wells is still listed as the starter at tailback, but backup Dan Herron's name also is listed in capital letters, indicating his standing as a co-starter.
"If he can practice, he can practice," Tressel said of Wells. "If he can't practice, obviously we wouldn't use him."

But seriously, I'd think if his big toe was part of the injury it would be protected? Odd that his big toe is sticking out and he appears to be flexing it in this picture. I know...I know...I'm thinking too much.

Tressel said in his presser that the trainers said earlier this morning that Beanie would be doubtful but when he saw Beanie at about 10:30 AM today, Beanie said he felt great. Tressel won't rule him out for this weekend, but said he'll definitely be in against USC.

The toe was actually wrapped up. The boot was for ankle stability, because at that point they didn't know if it was a ligament problem throughout his foot, up to his ankle. They were uber-cautious with him, as they should be. But, he's fine. Minor ligament tear.

I'm driving 200 miles to the game this weekend but I'll be [censored]ed if Beanie actually plays in it. We don't need him for Ohio, we need him for USC.

Glad to hear it's not serious.
