The college game really needs players like Oden and Durant to play a couple years!
Just to show the future generations that college is a wonderful, life changing experience. Worth pursuing.

As far as money, I think it's paid by the university.

The NCAA could not legally prevent a player from insuring himself. However, for the school to do it for him would constitute a benefit not available to all students.

I don't know the official rules or the specifics of Greg's case, but if I was a betting man I would bet that any policy is paid for by the Oden's.

I personally wish the NBA would adopt a policy like the NFL's where the player needs to be three years removed from HS before even being allowed to make the jump. A tremendous amount of "growing up" happens between the ages of 18 and 21. Greg already has a square head on his shoulders, but many don't and fall into a lot of the trappings of youth when they get millions of $'s in their bank accounts. But, since that is not the rule now, if I were advising Greg, I'd say go. His stock is never going to get higher.

It all comes down to what his personnal goals are. If he really did come to tOSU to win a national championship, then he just may shock many people and return. With him back, I really do think we would be unstoppable next year. BUCKYLE said that if he came back, we may not lose a game next year, and as damn near impossible that is this day in age, I think we would have as good a shot as anyone is recent memory.

Whatever Greg choses to do, he has already been a tremendous ambassador to the Ohio State University in his short time in Columbus, and has gained a lifelong fan in me.

I have always thought that the policy was not paid for until the player actually signed a contract in his professional sport. (ie. Here is a 10 million dollar insurance policy for nothing, but if you make the league you have to pay us 20)

Agreed. We've seen so many people who seem level headed make some really stupid decisions in that age group.

I don't think Oden would fall into that trap, but I truly hope that when he does go pro, he remains as humble and personable as he is today.

A few notes and observations after the Final Four and this week?s marathon: GREAT EXPECTATIONS Did Greg Oden show the world what type of NBA player Joakim Noah will be ?
Oden owned him.
Oden scored 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and suffered only 2 turnovers in 38 minutes Monday night in the NCAA Tournament championship game.
Noah was 1 of 3 from the field and had only 3 rebounds and 4 fouls.
Incidentally, the Ohio State student section chanted at Noah: ?No one likes you.?

Bill Walton says he does not envy Greg Oden, the Ohio State freshman center who must decide whether to return for his sophomore year or go pro.
?I feel bad for Greg Oden,? Walton told Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee. ?I would never try to tell him what his decision should be, but when I entered the NBA, the quality of my life went down.
?I actually think this new rule that keeps kids out of the draft for a year after their high school class graduates is a good thing, and I hope the league adds another year, maybe eventually makes it three years.?

Glad to see these comments by Walton. Some of the other comments he made about what a bad job Matta is doing in his handling of Oden in a basketball sense made it sound like he thought it would be best for Greg to go to the NBA and get in a different system.

The student athlete is responsible for paying the premium. The NCAA has arranged for the athlete to obtain financing through a program with US Bank. An excerpt from the NCAA site:

Student-athletes approved for this program are automatically eligible for a loan, if necessary, through U.S. Bank, N.A., Sports Division, in Cincinnati Ohio. The interest rate is very competitive and a co-signer is not required. The student-athlete is obligated to repay the loan in full when any of the following occurs: (1) the student-athlete signs a professional contract, (2) the disability benefits become available due to a covered injury or sickness or (3) the coverage is no longer in effect and the loan note matures.

Greg was constantly harrassed in the paint, and was still almost always in foul trouble, yet he says he should have been used "more aggressively".
