The NBA Lottery


I was on the plane when it happened, but as soon as I landed I had 22 messages that all said "Portland 1 Seattle 2." It was a total shock to me not to be funny, but I forgot those two teams where even in the lottery. Every media news wants to know what I think but really I dont even know what to think.

Seldom has an 18-year-old entered the realm of college hoops with such command of the game. That's not to say the former Ohio State guard is the most dominant player in the world -- it's hard for a guard to make the claim. But consider this, Greg Oden has been the golden child since early in high school and the one constant through those years has been Conley.

I stole that from the Conley thread, but I didn't want to hijack that one.

This statement is a little misleading. The other constants besides Conley are the fact that Oden is huge, strong and a great basketball player. I just thought that needed to be said.

Greg Oden admitted he was out of breath after his workout Wednesday for the Portland Trail Blazers. By no means was the 7-foot draft prospect coasting in on his reputation.

Two words sent a buzz through the Portland Trail Blazers practice facility Wednesday. And they had nothing to do with Greg Oden?s basketball skills, the media swarming inside the building to watch him, or the players and team personnel crowding the gym during his workout.

?Yes, ma?am.?

That?s how Oden respectfully addressed the women working at the facility. But that simple gesture left them wide-eyed and gushing over the Ohio State center, telling anyone who would listen through their laughter and disbelief.

TUALATIN — Zach Randolph shuffled through words, searching for a description that would match the awe he felt Wednesday.

Legit, he offered.

The real deal.

But nothing seemed to fit as the Blazers forward watched Ohio State center Greg Oden work out at the Blazers’ practice facility.

“Words can’t describe him,” Randolph said. “He’s gonna end up being one of the best big men that ever plays the game.”

SEATTLE - Greg Oden didn't workout while meeting with the SuperSonics, on the advice of his agent. That gave the prized center from Ohio State more time on his first trip to Seattle to assess what he's learned during his pre-draft tour of the Northwest.
n The relative anonymity of walking around Seattle instead of smaller Portland was refreshing. Although the 7-footer is about to become a millionaire from the NBA draft, he was able to go to the movies Thursday night and have only one person stop him to pose for a picture.
n He doesn't mind being considered a franchise savior before he has even played his first NBA game. "I'm OK with it," he said Friday, smiling. "I don't know if it's going to happen."
