Greg Oden Arrived?

There you go, America.
Greg Oden -- the man who was projected as a top overall draft pick since he was a junior in high school -- has arrived. Took just 12 shots, but managed 22 points and 10 rebounds.
It's in all kinds of stories as his coming out party; his big night, or his arrival.
If you look only at the box score, Oden has arrived and the rest of the Blazers somehow let him down against a lesser Golden State team.
But I watched that game, and I can tell you that the thing that's letting everyone down is the box score.
Even as a Blazer fan who is steadfastly over the moon about this young man (he will crush you) it is flat wrong to say that the Blazers held him back last night. The opposite is true.
Here's what I saw: After a slow start, the Blazers were rolling. Honestly, it was just so obviously Portland's night. They had better players at nearly every position, and they were hunting turnovers on defense, while putting the right pieces in place on offense.
Then Greg Oden checked in.

This morning I checked and found that Greg Oden had the worst plus/minus of any player on the court. In his 30 minutes, Golden State outscored Portland by 11 points. It's rare that a player on the losing team has the best plus/minus in the game, but the guy Oden came in for, Joel Przybilla, tied two Warriors for that title. Portland was ten points better than Golden State in Przybilla's 17 minutes.
So, no, Portland didn't hold back Oden last night, and he didn't arrive.
He is enormous. He is strong. He is talented. He got a lot of minutes and touches, and turned them into some nice numbers. But the player who is going to anchor Portland's next title team? I'm still patiently waiting to see Greg Oden evolve into that guy.

yada yada yada...so we are four games in with Oden and he and the Blazers do not look exactly like prime Shaq and the Lakers yet. Wow who would have thought it? We're dealing with one smart cookie here...please..

Anyways, Greg should have another decent game tonight vs Chi-town's frontline of Noah, Gooden and Gray.

22 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 8/12 shooting, in only his 5th career NBA game and only his 4th back from injury but yeah, lets harp on how awkward he looked and his turnovers. They lost a road game(the last of a 5 game road trip) on questionable officiating, but somehow it's Greg's fault.

Greg hasn't been playing much tonight - maybe resting a little after 30 min last night - but looking good through about 4 min left in the 3rd quarter.

On a side note - the blazers are a [censored]ton of fun to warch.

I am so happy this game is being televised. You're right, this team is fun to watch. Every player understands his role.

Greg is just a force. He's going to get 14-16 points a game based on raw talent alone. Once he develops some moves, he may put up Dwight Howard-like stats.

Greg and his beard are dominating.

11 points 10 rebs 3 blocks. He is so physical down there in the paint. Very reminiscent of Shaq.

The West will be ours soon enough.

Jesus, I expected this game to be closer than a 43 point game.

I didn't realize the Blazers were on tonight. I would've watched if I'd have known it. Looks like I didn't miss much of a game.

It has been domination from the opening tip. I can't remember the last time we blew out a team this bad. Maybe Dallas in the playoffs years back.

Former Ohio State center Greg Oden is not a bust

APGreg Oden had his breakout game against Golden State on Tuesday.
This is to all of those critics who claimed that Greg Oden was going to be a bust or the next Sam Bowie. Oden missed his rookie season (2007-08) due to a knee injury. And he went down with a foot injury minutes into his debut last month.
So when Oden returned from his injury against Miami on Nov. 12, he scored only three points and had two rebounds in 16 minutes.

Suddenly, those critics became louder. But Oden picked up the pace and he had his most impressive game on Tuesday against Golden State. His 22 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks were not enough for the victory, but it was the beginning of what Oden will become in this league.
He picked up where he left off on Wednesday night with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in only 17 minutes in a blowout victory over Chicago.

Greg with 7 points 8 boards and 3 assists tonight in a big win over Sacramento. No blocks however, but he did only play 19 minutes.

Tomorrow he squares off against Shaq and Phoenix. Can't freaking wait!
