He ain't risking nothing by playing 6 games in that hypothetical scenario. I can't imagine what kind of competitive athlete wouldn't bind that sucker up and step out and see what's happening.

In fact, I don't know how much of a mind-meld is going on here, but I find it hard to believe that Oden could resist lacing 'em up for Carolina or the Gators. I'm with vr...the dude is going to play. It's a wrist, not a knee. You can stabilize the thing and limit your dexterity, but a 75% Greg Oden is a mighty fine thing to have. Of course, if he doesn't play early, I've got no problem with these guys cutting their teeth in those big games. This team is around a 4 or 5-seed anyway without Oden.

It is too bad that his wrist wasn't properly diagnosed last February (i.e. when he initially injured it). If he would have had the surgery back then he probably would be cleared to play by the start of the season.
finally someone with some sense.
x-rays suck, I had 3 before, I had an M.R.I and that was 3 months after I did it .

You can't have rehab for it and thats what making me laugh so much. It heals itself and then you have to start doing your own toughing up the hand to make any contact with less pain.

He will be back by the North Carolina game. I dont care what anyone says they have been taking leaps and bounds in medicine the past three years. Five years ago when someone tore there knee up it took them like 14 months to fully recover, now its like 8 or 9.

Listen, lets put this to rest right now.......

1. Do we know when he will be on the court? No

2. Do we have an idea of the timeframe? Yes, late November to early December, my hunch is he will be back before UNC.

3. Will he play this year? Absolutely

So, its a wait and see approach, coach Matta was on 1460 yesterday and said that Greg has limited mobility in the wrist right now and they are being cautious. I think his absence early in the season will only help this team come tournament time.

I'm with Akron on this one. Despite medical advances there are still athletes whose careers are ended by a variety of injuries. I am not an expert on this particular injury, but from what I can gather it is very difficult to project recovery. A recurrence would be career threatening. As a long time season ticket holder I am salivating to see this kid play. But if he were to come to me for advice I would tell him to sit and wait for the next draft.

I'm failing to see how this put anything to rest as it is all speculations till at this point. I doubt anyone's guess is better then anyone elses on the subject of when Greg will be ready. I'm hopeful for what Slick said earlier when he called for the B10 season for his return. Matta is right though (of course) even if Oden never plays a a single game at Ohio State he has made a bigger difference then most will realize. I agree with taking a wait-and-see approach with Greg. Football thankfully should keep us all very excited this season and keep our mind off of his early season recovery.

I know an orthopaedic surgeon who is also team doctor for the local high school.
He says a wrist is pinned if there is the possibility of bones in the hand shifting out of alignment because of the ligament tear. The pins can often be inserted right through the skin ( no surgery). The ligament then repairs itself. A splint keeps everything in place.
The pins are normally removed within 6 to 8 weeks.
There is then some minor rehab to get the muscles back up to full strength.

From this it sounds like GO should get rid of the pins right about now and rehab for just a few weeks.

Obviously no one can quarantee any of this because he never saw the wrist, but I thought it might be of general interest.

May be a different type of injury, but Greg's pins were surgically inserted and he is expecting them to be in place probably until October.

He's young and very resilient. If his nutrition is good and he keeps up with his conditioning we should see him before 2007. He is tough and very smart to go with his athleticism by everything I've read and heard so I should think he will be fine and play when he is ready. In the meantime we have some guys who can really play and our time without Greg will hopefully make the chemistry that much better.

Just wanted to share this ---

I heard Matta speaking at a basketball camp over the weekend, and he was an excellent speaker -- talked to kids mainly about attitude. he obviously talked about Greg and shared a few "stats":

7' tall --- we all know that
7'5" wingspan
36" VERTICAL JUMP!!! (I knew he was athletic, but not 36" -- that means his head would hit the rim from a flat-footed jump!)

He then said the thing he liked best about Greg was this --- per Matta, "Greg Oden is the finest human being I have ever recruited, bar none."

I personally know this to be true, but it was very nice/refreshing to hear Matta reinforce it.

Dispatch

Quote:

Greg Oden’s mother and younger brother won’t have as far to drive to see him play at Ohio State this season.

Oden’s mother, Zoe, has rented an apartment in Dayton, where his younger brother, Anthony, will attend Dunbar High School this year and play football and basketball, the Dayton Daily News reported. Anthony Oden is a 6-foot-8, 270-pound junior.

"I’ve got friends that go here. I enjoy playing with them," Anthony Oden said. "I think this is a better place for me than Indianapolis."
Zoe Oden said her younger son "needed a male role model" and called Dunbar assistant coach Al Powell "a wonderful person." Powell also was an assistant coach on the AAU team on which Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Dunbar graduate Daequan Cook played.

From Grad21's Dispatch quote on the Hunter thread:

"Matta said Oden, who had surgery in June to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist, has begun therapy to increase the range of motion in the joint. The wrist was stabilized for the first eight weeks after surgery. It remains uncertain when Oden will be cleared for practice or games."

I think this fits with the info in my post above.

is this doctor friend familiar with Oden's case? If not, then I'm not sure why you're arguing.

If the mods on this board don't want this kind of information, I'll be happy not to post.
