Junior-college guard Je’Kel Foster decided yesterday to play basketball for Ohio State, but as of last night he had not signed a binding letter of intent with the Buckeyes, his coach said.

Foster, a 6-foot-2 guard from Chipola College in Marianna, Fla., chose Ohio State over Illinois State. They were the only schools he visited after he was scouted by OSU coaches at the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in March in Hutchinson, Kan.

Foster canceled a visit to Minnesota yesterday after making his decision.

Chipola coach Chris Jans refused to confirm Foster’s commitment last night. But Illinois State coach Porter Moser told a reporter from The Pantagraph in Bloomington, Ill., that Jans informed him yesterday afternoon that Foster had chosen Ohio State.

Jans said last night that he did not know when Foster would sign. Foster could not be reached. OSU coach Jim O’Brien can not comment on the player until he has received the letter of intent.

With Foster in the fold, Ohio State has one scholarship left to offer during the spring signing period, which began yesterday and ends May 19. The Buckeyes have offered it to 6-5 Malik Hairston of Renaissance High School in Detroit.

Radinovic named team MVP


Outgoing captain Velimir Radinovic was honored with the Jerry Lucas Most Valuable Player Award at the team’s seasonending banquet last night.

Radinovic led the Big Ten in field goal percentage (.653) while averaging 10.3 points per game as a senior.

Sophomore Terence Dials received the Most Improved Player Award after averaging 10.4 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds.

Senior Shaun Smith received the John Havlicek Most Inspirational Award for the third consecutive season. Sophomore Ugo Nwankwo, a biology major, was presented the Fred Taylor Award for Academic Excellence.

Foster earned Player of the Week honors after leading Ohio State to a 3-0 record last week, including a 70-67 win over Iowa State. Foster went 6-of-8 from the three-point line (.750), while connecting on 9-of-12 shots from the field (.750) to finish with a career-high 28 points against the Cyclones.

He also was perfect from the foul line (4-of-4), while recording six rebounds and a pair of steals. The senior guard opened the week with 11 points against Norfolk State. He followed with another double-digit performance, tallying 15 points in an 85-75 win over Belmont. For the season, Foster leads OSU in scoring with 17.1 points per game, while shooting a conference-best 68.3 percent from the field (41-of-60) and 60 percent from three-point range (22-of-37). The Natchez, Miss., native earns his first Big Ten weekly accolade and becomes the first Buckeye to be named Player of the Week since teammate Terence Dials earned back-to-back honors (Dec. 20 and Dec. 27, 2004) last season.

Enough already about Greg Oden and the 2006 recruiting class -- let's talk about this season's Ohio State team. The Buckeyes are off to a 7-0 start after an impressive three-point win over Iowa State in Des Moines and one of the main reasons the Buckeyes are in the Top 25 and soon to be climbing higher is senior guard Je'Kel Foster.

Foster is leading the Buckeyes in scoring (17.6 ppg) and minutes played (32.6). His two late steals helped key a 10-point win over Belmont and then, against the Cyclones, Foster scored 28 points. Foster converted two free throws that gave Ohio State a one-point lead in the final minutes.

The Buckeyes will get plenty of hype next season, but this edition (while blocking out the distractions of a former coach's lawsuit and the postponement of an NCAA infractions hearing) is a viable postseason team. We need to acknowledge that sooner rather than later, and Foster's play helps draw the necessary attention.

That one game last week with all those 3 pointers by a few players. I still can't remember anyother previous OSU team that had that OPTION and a down low player like DIALS

I wish I could say I felt all along that Je'Kel would turn into this type of scorer, but that would be a bold-faced lie. I am so pleasantly surprised to see that Je'Kel can be both a scorer and a distributor, combined with a great team leader. I just wish he had another year on campus...

what an amazing pickup this guy was. And i think most people felt he was a defensive specialist
