Groom was actually pretty good at downing them inside the 20...that was one of the reasons so many of us were [censored]ed that he didn't win the Ray Guy Award in 2002.

Sander hasn't punted too well either...Green Bay would probably cut him outright, but I guess they figure since they have to punt every possession that Favre doesn't throw a pick, they'll just wait until his leg falls off and then pick up someone else.

groom has no problem kicking the ball like he did in college. the problem he is dealing with is hangtime. you get a lot of brownie points because nfl coaches look at hangtime and distance as about a 50/50 split. they all want lotsa hangtime which is hard to master with long punts as well. groom could very easily kick just as well and prolly better than he did in college but it wont get him anywhere in the nfl.

The Rams signed punter Andy Groom after a tryout Friday morning.

Groom, an Ohio State product, was with the Redskins for the first two games of the 2005 season before being replaced by Derrick Frost. He averaged 39 yards per punt on his 11 punts for the Redskins, including two punts inside the 20.

Linehan said Groom's arrival was no reflection on the performance of veteran punter Matt Turk. Linehan said Turk has been punting well, but the team wanted to take a look at Groom as a developmental prospect after watching him boom several punts on Friday morning.
