WR Michael Jenkins (Atlanta Falcons)

"WR Michael Jenkins is catching on.

You could argue that Ohio State WR Michael Jenkins is one of those two or three standout players at the 2004 Senior Bowl. I really like his ability. He dropped one ball today, but caught everything else. Jenkins made one spectacular catch against Penn State's Rich Gardner. He has a tremendous ability to adjust to the ball and is an unselfish player who blocks well. He had a great game against Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl and has had a great week in Mobile. Jenkins is big, athletic and smart. If he gets out of the 1st round, then something is wrong."

Will Smith, Will Allen, Michael Jenkins and Chris Gamble have all been mentioned as possible first rounders. I really only (at present) see Smith (and maybe Gamble) going that high, but I could see any of the others sneak in at the end, or more likely (IMO) in the early to mid second.

FWIW, Kiper has Gamble at #8 to the Browns (10th prospect on his big board), Will Smith #13 to Buffalo (11th), and Jenkins at #32 to the Patriots.

But still. Not too shabby. Way to go Michael.

C-Dog: I think Jenkins is better at receiver than Gamble is at corner...barely, but I think so. The only sure first-rounder is Smith in my mind. Jenkins and Gamble are early- to mid-second round, with Allen lat second or early third.

I don't think at this point there is any chance of Gamble slipping to the 2nd round anymore. Too much raw talent and played too well in the Fiesta Bowl.

I agree, Cinci. Gamble is a first round pick, no question in my mind. He gets picked early on athletic ability and potential alone. Now way a corner with his size and athleticism misses out on the first round unless he was a known trouble maker or got in trouble with the law. Gamble doesn't have that problem.

Nice to hear MJ is tearing it up. Right or wrong the scouts put a lot of stock into these All Star games. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jenkins slip into the first round. If he goes in the second someone will have a major steal on their hands.

I keep hearing the term(s) "unlimited potential" coming from people's mouths about Gamble. While I would have liked to have seen him realize some of that potential inside the Shoe for one more season, I've got no beef with him going pro. Like Tress says, if you can get picked up in the 1st round, it would be silly not to go.

But I'm just rambling now. I'll be surprised if CG isn't a 1st rounder. Shocked if Will Smith is. Not shocked at all though if CG goes before WS. I suppose that's odd. As far as Jenkins, I could see him going to New England, I just don't want him to.

I'd love to see him go to the Packers, but that won't happen.

You would honestly be shocked if Will Smith is a first rounder? I never thought there was a doubt in anyone's mind.

Poor wording. Surprised if Gamble isn't a 1st rounder, shocked if Will Smith isn't.

I think Smith would have been a 1st rounder last year, and he's only improved his stock this since then.

So no, I'm not the lone Smith doubter. heh.

Here in Cleveland, we don't expect good draft choices out of the Browns, seeing that they haven't had a good draft since Newsome and Matthews in 1978.

I don't want guys with "unlimited potential" with the #8 pick, I want a great player. Will Smith IS a great player. From a "purely Buckeye" standpoint, I'd be [censored]ed if the Browns took Gamble with Big Willy still on the board.

I agree. If you're picking #8 you have holes to fill and you should go with the more sure fire selection. A team like New England can afford to take a chance on a guy in the first round but not the Browns.

My bad, Clarity. Obviously I didn't read what you said right.

Being a Buckeye and Redskins fan, it wouldn't bother me at all to see the Skins pick Wil Smith but I doubt if it will happen even though they need some serious help on defense.

bucksnut68 has scUM sympathies
The Browns would be stupid to pick anything other than an o-linemen with their first 3 picks.

Jenkins was picked as the North's MVP. Pretty good considering the QB play he suffered. Does Navarre suck, or what?

He does even halfway decently in the combine, and he really may be a 1st round pick. I couldn't be happier for him.

Made a nice leaping catch on the sidelines and showed excellent body control. He's a tall receiver with potential to add more bulk to his frame but he lacks ideal deep speed. More of a glider than a burner. Very smooth and builds speed as he goes but he did not display great initial burst. Biggest question is whether he can get deep this week against some of the fastest, most prolific cornerbacks in the country?

Tuesday (1/20/04): Jenkins had another solid day on Tuesday including a very good 7-on-7 period. He has displayed the most consistent hands of the skill guys and looks really smooth catching the football. What really impressed us through Day Two was his field awareness. He caught a number of deep outs on the sideline and got both feet in bounds on every occasion. Also did an adequate job of escaping press coverage and in the one-on-one period displayed enough deep speed to get behind Penn State's Rich Gardner.

Wednesday (1/21/04): Jenkins allowed a perfectly thrown slant ball to bounce of his chest for what we think might have been the first pass he dropped the entire week, which is pretty impressive. He by far has the best hands of any receiver in this game. He has kind of surprised us this week with what we consider deceptively better speed than his 40-time indicates and he would have had a nice long completion during the one-on-ones had John Navarre not overshot the throw. Jenkins has the most upside of the receivers on the North team, partly because of his size but mostly because of his consistency. If Jenkins is able to bulk up without losing any speed, he would be a good fit as a No. 2 possession receiver in the NFL.

Thursday (1/22/04): Jenkins concluded the full-speed practices with another solid effort. He made it through to Thursday's practice having only dropped one ball all week. He has great size but needs to bulk up and become better at escaping press coverage. He made a couple of nice catches in the red-zone drills this afternoon, including two fade routes, but Montana State's Joey Thomas won a jump ball against Jenkins on the first play of that drill.

<spacer type=block height=1>

SUMMARY

It can be argued that Jenkins helped himself as much or more than any other player at the Senior Bowl this week. After playing in a run-first offensive scheme at Ohio State, Jenkins was somewhat of an enigma as a pro prospect. The big thing everyone wanted to see from him this week was whether or not he could separate on a consistent basis against top cornerback talent -- and the answer is yes. He does not have great speed and will not run by many cornerbacks in the NFL. He also could stand to add some bulk and strength in order to give himself a better chance of breaking the press and holding up for a 16-game schedule in the NFL. But Jenkins showed very good route running skills, the ability to drop his weight and burst out of breaks without losing much in transition. He also had the best hands of any receiver here this week. Jenkins' performance could have propelled him into the late first round. If nothing else he's a lock as a second round pick, whom we believe can quickly develop into a solid No. 2 starting receiver in the NFL. We expect Jenkins to be drafted late in the first round or early in the second.

<spacer type=block height=1>

FINAL GRADE

A-

That's from ESPN/Scouts, Inc. Seems conflicted and even contradictory to me, but everyone's entitled to their own opinions. Even CFB analysts I guess.

Jenkins is what we hope for in all our players. Great player and a great kid. Thanks for coming back for your Senior season Michael. Here's to you being a !st round pick and a mega-millionaire in the process.

We "stiffs" in life often get [censored]ed at the riches that athletes achieve. Especially the punks. Anybody that has a problem with MJ getting "phat" in the pro's needs to remember one thing.
