Barton keeps eye on Michigan

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus -- Their game is 31 days away, but Ohio State is leading Michigan so far, at least in the little contest Ohio State offensive tackle Kirk Barton likes to play.
Indiana's win over Iowa on Saturday got the attention of the Buckeyes, but they are listed as 31-point favorites for Saturday's home game with the Hoosiers. And Ohio State knows exactly what team in maize and blue is right behind them in the AP poll.
"We know where we are," Barton said, "and we know Michigan is one of the top two teams in the country. You could probably flip-flop us and not have much of an argument. We watch them on film and they're tough. That's going to be a battle, but you've got to focus on getting through Indiana first."
Not surprisingly, Barton said the Buckeyes usually wind up watching the Michigan film first when their next opponent has already played the Wolverines.
"You kind of see how their offensive linemen are doing compared to us," Barton said. "And you see if they beat a team by 40, we want to beat them by 50. I don't know if that gives you a mental edge or anything, but you want to say we're going a little bit better than they are."
In Barton's game, OSU is leading. The Buckeyes and the Wolverines have played two common opponents so far, Penn State and Michigan State. Barton acknowledged the Spartans had more injuries against Ohio State than against Michigan, but in that head-to-head battle, Michigan outscored the Nittany Lions and Spartans, 48-23, while Ohio State won their two games by a score of 64-13.
Injury update:
Running back Antonio Pittman should be fine and defensive tackle David Patterson is still day-to-day, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.
Pittman rolled his left ankle in Saturday's 38-7 win over Michigan State, but Tressel hasn't noticed any lingering effects for his starting running back and players said he practiced Tuesday.
"You never know with running backs," Tressel said. "They're like greased lightning when they get the ball and the other 23? hours of the day, they're slow. But I think he's fine. I don't know otherwise."
Barton said he didn't notice Pittman having any problems Saturday.
"He's a tough back and he's not going to show opposing defenses if there's anything wrong," Barton said. "I'm sure he worked hard at that."

Timeout with Ohio State offensive tackle Kirk Barton

By Staff reports

Why should the Heisman Trophy go to Troy Smith?
"With the Heisman, you have to say, 'Where would that team be without that guy?' We'd still be a good team, but Troy definitely gives us that extra dimension."
What's it like playing with a player who may go down as the best OSU quarterback ever?
"That's the thing about playing here. Mike Nugent was the best kicker ever. A.J. Hawk is up for one of the best linebackers ever. You're always playing with guys who could be legends. Ted Ginn is one of the best special-teams players ever. It's been a fun ride."
Have you heard much from past players during this season?
"I talked to (former lineman) Shane Olivea. He said this is what you'll remember for the rest of your life. If we drop one, that's what everyone will remember. The 1998 team ? everyone remembers the Michigan State loss. No one remembers they beat Michigan and then beat Texas A&M in the Sugar Bowl. With a season like this, if you drop one game, that's what your season will be defined as."
Have you been getting hounded for tickets?
"I give my tickets away at Christmas. I'm too cheap to buy presents. I say, 'You're going to Indiana,' or 'You're going to Michigan.' "

This might have been the Champagne talking. Or not. The guy is 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds, so I'd imagine it would take more than a glass or two to make Barton silly.

But pressed for details on why he doesn't like the Fighting Irish -- whom the Buckeyes whipped 36-20 last year in the Fiesta Bowl -- Barton didn't back off very far.

"I don't know," he said, before going sarcastically diplomatic. "They're a great program, they're Notre Dame -- whoo."

Pause.

"They couldn't handle us."

Lineman Barton soaks in huge win

COLUMBUS ? Among the pack of media members in the Ohio State post-game interview room, there suddenly was a familiar scent.
Cigar smoke? In here?
And then, Kirk Barton emerged. The Buckeyes' right tackle sat in a chair to address the press while puffing on three-quarters of a ... well, what was it?
"This is a fine Cuban cigar," said the 6-foot-6, 310-pound Barton, and no one cared to ask him to explain.
"Sometimes you have to be confident in what's going to happen," Barton said. "I bought a bottle of Dom Perignon. It was like three hundred and 50 bucks, a big chunk out of my scholarship check. You have to put your money where your mouth is sometimes. Michigan's a great team, but we're a great team. We felt like winning today."
He was speaking for the entire top-ranked Ohio State football team, which beat No. 2 Michigan, 42-39, Saturday in the most explosive offensive game the series has known in its modern history. But he might as well have been speaking for just the offensive line, the group that had helped the Buckeyes pound out 187 rushing yards against a Wolverines defense that had allowed opponents an average of 29.9 per game in its first 11 games.
Put simply, the Buckeyes on Saturday gained more than half of the total Michigan had allowed all season (329).
So, Kirk, did the game live up to the hype?
"Oh yeah, I mean, did you watch it?" he said. "That's gonna be an instant classic tomorrow at about noon when I'm going into film."
What he and the offensive line will see is one sack allowed and two rushing touchdowns of at least 52 yards (a 52-yarder from freshman Chris Wells in the second quarter and a 56-yarder from junior Antonio Pittman in the third quarter).
"Compared to the film we watched, we knew they hadn't gone against a great offensive line yet," Barton said. "We knew if we got after 'em, it would be a little bit of a change for 'em. They haven't gone against a bunch of guys that can really block the way we do."
And don't even get him started on Pittman, who upped his season totals to 1,171 yards and 13 touchdowns with 139 yards and a score. Barton became Pittman's campaign manager for All-Big Ten consideration.
"I said last year when he scored that winning touchdown (against Michigan), and then they gave it to Albert Young and Tony Hunt and a bunch of no-names," said Barton. "Pitt's the best back in the Big Ten, without question.... So, I hope he gets his due, finally, because he's been carrying us for a while."
Barton even threw a compliment toward the boys up north. Sort of.
"I wouldn't say domination, because hell, they were within three points of beatin' us," Barton said. "We played hard, and they played very hard today. I take my hat off to them. They were classy. They played as hard as a team possibly could ? and not win."

Is there any video of Barton's interview? I didn't watch the post-game presser (for celebratory reasons), but I have a feeling Barton's comments are even better with vocal inflection...Thanks in advance if anyone has the video, or a youtube link, or something

I've read someone saying Barton said something to make people believe he was going pro next year? Any word on wether he's going to stay or go? I think he'd be better off if he stayed, but if he's first round then I could see why he'd leave.

Ginn is a lock for the 1st round. Pitcock has a good workout and he'd be a lock for the first round. Smith should be an end of the 1st round pick. Gonzo, Pittman and Barton all being 1st round picks? Highly doubtful.

BARTON LEAVING EARLY?

Buckeye right tackle Kirk Barton, a Perry graduate, will have a decision to make. The junior could leave a year early and enter the NFL Draft. But Barton probably won?t be a first-round pick. Head Coach Jim Tressel recommends players who are projected first-rounders leave early.
Barton may be better off staying another season at OSU, becoming a captain and playing himself into a first-round selection.

A few good tackles in this draft... Doug Free, Sam Baker, Joe Thomas, Levi Brown, Jake long (I think he leaves). Barton would be better served with another year of college.

Isn't Baker a junior 2?

Baker is a junior this well yes. I REALLY want Barton back next year though to help protect our new QB and to assist in making our currently good running game a ferocious attack.

Interesting report coming from The Columbus Dispatch this morning regarding Barton's stogie/champagne incident after the Michigan game:

Sports Section E4 (Bottom Left Corner)
OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK

Work Goes On
Coach Jim Tressel was not happy that starting offensive right tackle Kirk Barton brought champagne into the locker room for the postgame celebration of the win over Michigan and that Barton later took a cigar into the media interview room. Asked recently whether Barton faced some sanctions because of it, Tressel said: "We've spent significant amount of time together talking about it, and we've got a plan. I'll just leave it at that."
