I don't disagree with you or Grad on the you-can-lead-a-horse-to-water aspects of this incident. What I'm trying to say is that the values we middle class folks think of as universal are not. A kid who has not been exposed to our behavior, our decision making process, our approach to problems, probably doesn't a) value them b) understand them c) act on them. No surprise there.

When you add the rule bending that goes on with regard to athletes while they are in junior and senior high, rule bending by ADULTS, not the kid, and then you expect the kid to KNOW he can't break some rules, you've created a very confusing world.

What do I mean by rule bending? In the past ten years, years which would have "exposed" Clifford to how he is "suppossed to act," we have seen "students" move from school to school to follow a certain coach or avoid discipline that would interfere with their sports elgibility (OJ Mayo is a prime example), we have seen the travesty that was the gift giving, limo rides, Hummer ownership of LeBron James, the inability of OHSAA to enforce much of anything.

Clifford acting as if the law didn't apply to him, or in open defiance of the law, is dissappointing, but hardly unexpected. As the song from South Pacific goes, You Have to be Carefully Taught.

According to police, Ohio State defensive back Eugene Clifford reportedly punched two bar employees in the face while they were trying to break up a fight, then threatened to get a gun and shoot them.

Another man present that night, Ravelle Sadler, 18, was arrested and charged with aggravated menacing for threatening to go to his car, get a gun, and shoot the bar employees.
If Sadler was the only one that made the threat, the Plain Dealer made a bad mistake. They need to follow things up to either verify their version or to issue a retraction/apology.

But even if it's just the fight, I believe that Clifford shouldn't be allowed to play football for tOSU again.

Ravell Saddler was involved in this???? The kids dad is a freaking Cincinnati Police Officer! He should freaking know better than that! Saddler is a UC recruit and a former Colerain teammate of Clifford's...they should know each other.

yep. he just graduated in June and would be a freshman this fall. He was a reserve DB as a Sophomore when Clifford was a senior. Good football player. Kind of cocky but didn't (appear) to be a trouble maker or get into any trouble.

Scout and Rivals both show Ravelle Sadler, a 2008 Colerain grad, with a signed LOI to Western Michigan.

it's just been a troubling trend for the last two years of former players getting arrested for stupid things and it overshaddows the good things that the majority of former players have done.

Connor Smitha and Tyler Moeller may not factor much on the two-deep as redshirt sophs, but they are getting good grades and working hard in Columbus.

Dominick Goodman and Andre Revells are leaders for the Bearcats.

Kyle Lumpkin will be the feature back for the Air Force Academy this fall...and there a host of other players at smaller schools representing the school and the community well.

Time for me to defend my home town Yes, Columbus is a big city.. but pot is hardly a big city temptation. Not to mention he failed a drug test before coming to Columbus..

It is possible that I am being too harsh on the young man but his actions to me say he will not prosper at UC, Idaho, Jackson St or anywhere until he chnages his mindset. I think many posters here have been hinting around my thoughts, but it is clear to me he does not value the gift that has been given him. It appears he does not posses the correct mind set or drive to take full advantage of his atheltic gifts and make the most of those opportunities. From the outside looking in it appears he just wants to collect what he can and has no interest in chancing his habits or self to for the better. So regardless of where he is at (city, country, etc) until that assumed mind set is changed he or any other kid will not be a success.

I hope he is able top turn it around but if the past has any indication(and man many many time it does) I would not hold my breath.
