WR Santonio Holmes (official thread)
Columbus Dispatch
Charge against Holmes expected to be dropped
Wednesday, March 31, 2004
A disorderly conduct charge against Ohio State receiver Santonio Holmes is expected to be dropped today, according to an assistant city prosecutor.
The prosecution’s witnesses could not identify Holmes as having been involved in the November fight outside Morrill Tower, a campus dorm, said Robert Tobias, an assistant city prosecutor.
Ohio State backup quarterback Troy Smith, 19, was fined $100 yesterday after pleading no contest to disorderly conduct during the fight.
The dispute involved several women, including Smith’s girlfriend Ashley Evans, Tobias said. The women began fighting elsewhere and continued after they returned to campus. In a loading dock near Morrill Tower, the fight turned physical, said Holmes’ attorney, Christopher Cicero.
Evans had called Smith, who showed up in a van with Holmes and a football recruit.
Holmes, 20, was trying to break up the fight, Cicero said. "There were several people trying to break up the fight," he said.
A campus police report said that four female students were assaulted, but they suffered only minor injuries, Tobias said.
Holmes, a redshirt freshman, became a starter midway through the season. Several days after being charged, he was held out of the starting lineup in the Buckeyes’ 35-21 loss to Michigan.

I am glad to hear that something is getting done about this. I have been wondering for awhile as to what the outcome was going to be. Though there is one funny thing about this, wasn't Gamble supposed to be there also? There is nothing mentioned about it in the article though.

Glad to hear that... however why did he show up with a recruit? Not exactly what you want recruits to see on their visits...

I think the recruit might of been Kennedy. If Holmes was his host that weekend they probably were all out together.

It was Morgan. Odd timing too. This incident occurs and he commits the next day when he gets home.

1460 Article on Santonio Holmes
Perhaps some evidence that this year will probably be his last at Ohio State....
http://www.1460thefan.com/tf.php?sto...409-C1-01.html
"Every guy just really pushed ourselves, because not a lot of good things are happening in our community. A lot of guys looked at football as an opportunity. . . . to try and take care of their families and try to get out of there."
Holmes is intent on getting his family out of there. He has a 2-year-old son, Santonio III, and another boy due within the next two weeks.

I thought the same thing. Makes me wish Tressel didn't waste that redshirt year. I think we'll be very lucky if we see Santonio in the S&G next year.

You're putting the cart before the horse. Holmes has to have a huge '04 before he can even consider leaving early. He really hasn't proven himself at all yet.
And a redshirt year isn't always a waste. Holmes wouldn't have played a down in '02: he was behind Jenkins, Gamble, Vance, Carter, & Childress. You either RS him, or don't, and waste a year of eligibility. Either way, he's not playing.
