First round grade according to whom? Alex struggled with speed rushers in college and the NFL is faster. His off field issues obviously hurt him but his footwork is another issue.

Hopefully, he'll get a shot as a free agent and make the improvements necessary to have an NFL career.

He had a first / second round grade last year.

I'd be surprised if he didn't make a roster or practice squad. Good Luck to him, must have been a tough weekend.

Sucks for Alex, but... if he really likes drinking and driving so much, he could have waited to be drafted by the bungles.

I hope he gets picked up. He could be a RT somewhere in the league. I wish him nothing but the best.

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with undrafted rookie free agents OT Alex Boone (Ohio State) and CB Jahi Word-Daniels (Georgia Tech). Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

He'll get a shot at tackle in SF. If they move Staley to RT where he should be, he'll get a shot at LT. If they keep Staley at LT like I expect them to, he'll get an even better shot at RT. Niners got a huge steal here..

Two years in a row the Niners have picked up an undrafted Buckeye. Last year it was Larry Grant. If there's a guy who can scare alcohol out of anyone's system, it's Mike Singletary. Hopefully he's a positive influence on Alex and Alex can keep himself clean.

Not gonna happen, NJ.

Look at it this way, they draft the "Draddy" Winner at #1 and an Academic All-American in Robo at #2. This regime is not looking for a "project." I really hope Alex gets it right and has a career in the NFL, but no way in Hell does it happen in Cleveland.

"It was a humbling experience, that's for sure," Boone said of watching the draft all day.

He was projected as a high pick before his senior season at Ohio State, but saw his status affected by an arrest in California for public intoxication before the NFL combine.

"I learned some lessons the hard way," Boone said. "But the 49ers called and were very interested and pushing for me, and right now it's the best fit for me."

Boone has the talent to play in the NFL.
This is great "last chance" opportunity for him.
Many big time DE's in the B10 mentioned him as the best they faced.

Too bad none of the SEC DEs think so.

I've ragged on him a lot the last few seasons, but I hope he's finally learned his lesson and that he gets his [censored] together and succeeds in the NFL. I remember how excited I was when he committed to us...never would have thought he'd end up undrafted.

That being said, I wonder if anybody else would like to jump on board (other than you? and I) and predict that Alex really has NO future in the NFL.

You simply don't "p.i.s.s" away your opportunities the way that this kid has over the past 4 years and then hope that nobody has noticed. Obviously, every team in the NFL "noticed." And his "lesson" has been learned. All I can hope for is that Alex becomes a "role model" for future Buckeyes, ala Mickey Mantle when he spoke publicly about his pickled liver. Mantle was quoted as saying, "Yea, I'm a role model, DON'T be like me. Alex needs to do the same, and really take it to heart, and somehow build from it.

That being said, if by some slim chance he can actually get it together, as a Buckeye, I'll always be pulling for him. I just doubt it ever happens.

SANTA CLARA ? Alex Boone is a colossus of a man. He stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 328 pounds. He was a four-year starter at left offensive tackle at Ohio State and was a first-team all-Big Ten Conference selection as a senior.

When the draft ended and Boone didn't hear his name announced, he became what NFL teams refer to as a "priority free agent." In short, he was in demand.

But when San Francisco called, Boone stopped listening to offers.

"Obviously, coach (Mike) Singletary was the big reason," Boone said Friday. "As soon as they made the offer, we were talking about how he could help me and keep me grounded."

As with several players taking part in San Francisco's rookie minicamp this weekend, the reason Boone's draft stock crashed had more to do off-the-field issues than how he performed on it.

Boone has acknowledged an alcohol problem. In 2006, he was charged with drunken driving. In February, he had to be Tasered by Orange County sheriff's deputies after reportedly jumping on car hoods, yanking on a tow truck cable, trying to break a window and yelling obscenities at deputies. A sheriff's deputy said Boone's blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit, according to various reports.

With that in mind, Boone said his agent had circled the 49ers and their tough-love head coach as the ideal landing spot if Boone didn't get drafted.

Boone, meanwhile, will be given a shot at right offensive tackle, where depth is a concern for the 49ers.

"We talked about that, and (Singletary) said that he wants to run the ball," Boone said. "He said, 'That would be a great fit for you,' and I said, 'Absolutely. Coming from Beanie Wells (a running back at Ohio State), power running's all we do.' So I was excited to hear that."

When asked what steps he?s taken to deal with his issue, Boone said, ?Just staying away from it and knowing I don?t need it right now. I?m here to make the team, hopefully, and it?s all behind me.?

Some of Boone's comments do not fill me with confidence in terms of his ability to keep his life straight. I hope Singletary can keep him straight, but I doubt a HC is going to spent too much time on a undrafted FA, priority or not, to help him stay out of trouble.

Boones comments, specially the "I don't need it right now" sure leaves it open to the interpretation that he may need it tommorrow, I sure hope he gets his head out of his [censored] and turns his life around and at the very least becomes a pruductive member of society.
