I just watched last Saturday's game again, specifically looking at what Doug Datish did on every offensive play. I did this because I noticed in JT's presser this week that Datish was one of a handful of players that rated a winning performance in the coaches' post-game evaluations. In fact, he was awarded the Offensive Player of the game.
On about 25 rushing attempts, there were only a couple of running plays where it seemed that his assignment wasn't executed successfully. There were a few plays where he got off the line and hit linebackers and even safeties. On the play where Pittman got to the 1 yard line late in the game, Datish was on the right side (Hamby lined up as LT), and Doug walled off a man to help create a huge hole. On Troy's QB sneak 2 plays later, he quickly dove very low to help flatten the left side of the line. On passing downs, he was performing different types of blocking assignments. There were cut blocks timed with short QB drops, combination blocks, and 1-on-1 dropbacks. There was only one time in pass protection where his man got near Troy Smith. Troy was flushed on the play and gained 7 yards on 1st down, so it didn't hurt the drive. I know that many of us (including myself) have stated a preference to have somebody else starting at tackle. Well, I just want to say that last Saturday Doug Datish played an excellent game, and deserved his Offensive Player of the Game award. |

Excellent. Greenies for you.

I read that, too and also where JT thought Boone played good, but not a
winning number (not exactly sure his wording). Did you see anything specific about Boone. Great job Datish. |

At the beginning of this season many thought this guy would never be more that a career backup player! I guess that judgement was hasty. This is a classic example of how long it can take for lineman to develop. He will probably lock down that spot.

glad to hear he did so well, he was arguably one of the weaker links on the OL early on, but taosman hit the nail on the head.

Looks like Doug is turning it around. Well done. Probably another case of a guy stepping it up when he sees his fellow linemen (Rehring, Barton) going down. I take back my previous comments about him.

Couldn't find the Datish official thread ( and I used the search), so this goes here. Congrats to guys like Doug who hang in there and battle, week in and week out. He's come a long way and without the benefit of watching game film, I would guess that he played the game of his career. This is why you don't jump to conclusions about O-Linemen as they develop. Datish running with Ginn on the reverse was classic. Showed a lot of heart.

I noticed on 3 of the long td's, he was running down the field the whole way. He was constantly down the field loking to block someone. He's going to be a very good replacement for Mangold next season.
Congrats to the whole offensive line on a great season. We'll miss Sims and Mangold, but I think we'll see a pretty smooth transition next season. |

I have been critical of Datish this year, but today he showed up and played well. Lets hope this springboards him to a great year next year.

Datish i think needs some more props, so I'm bumping this
![]() He did a great job blocking downfield, it was probably the best game I've seen him play this year...I remember being quite critical earlier in the season, but he really showed something yesterday |

The first thing that will always come to my mind when I remember this victory is Datish running as hard as he can down the sideline looking for someone to block (on Ginn's TD run). Ginn blew right by him, but the memory of #50 trucking down the field as fast as he could go will always remain, to me, a symbol of Ohio State football. Way to go, Doug.

Doug Datish played a great game! He will be an all big 10 lineman next year if you ask me, he sealed off the edge on Pittman TD run, and was leading Ginn down the field...
