Mel Kiper: (1:37 PM ET ) If you throw in the juniors, the best LB in the country is James Lauranaitis, then you look at Dan Connor from Penn State. Then Ray Maualuga from USC and another kid Darry Beckwith from LSU, a juinor. Those are the guys that jump out at you. Brian Cushing from USC would have been, but he missed some time this year with injury.

Laurinaitis a finalist for Lott Trophy

Add the Lott Trophy to the list of awards for which Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis is a finalist.
The Lott Trophy, in its fourth year, is given to a defensive player for on- and off-field performance. A winner will be named Dec. 9.
The other three finalists are Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, Illinois linebacker J Leman and Virginia defensive end Chris Long.

I think with him now being a finalist for the Lott Trophy, that makes him capable of getting 5 awards(correct me if I am wrong). But I think he is eligible for the Bednarik, Butkus, Nagurski, Lott, and Lombardi Award and not to mention he has been mentioned in the Heisman race(not like he is going to win or anything). All of these awards are great accomplishments to even be finalists in, this just goes to show how greatly respected Laurinaitis is around the country.

Lets just hope we can get Jenkins, Gholston, and James to come back next year, if that happens we will be great(although we will still have a great team without these three), we do have great backups though that are capable of fulfilling all three places. So it is not a huge loss, but I am sure no one is going to deny any one of these three players from coming back. The important thing is to take this one step at a time and wait until after the season to see their desicions. All we can do now is wait patiently, take it one week at a time, watch this Saturday, and root for the Sooners. Boomer Sooner.

As good at developing linebackers as we are (And we are better at that than Penn State), I'd still say our best abilities come in developing CBs.

Still, any university that can transition from Matt Wilhelm, to AJ Hawk, to James Laurinaitis, to whoever comes after LA33 is great at producing linebackers. And those are just the best guys at the LB position at the time. Don't forget about Carpenter, Schlelgel, the Grants, Freeman, etc.

Congratulations to James. He clearly deserves it. He may not have Connor's numbers, but he comes up when it counts the most. His performance against Washington may have saved the Buckeye season.

The only reason he doesn't have Connor's numbers is because we were up by a lot in most games so he didn't play much beyond halftime, while Connor played nearly the entire game all season.
