He may have been one of the most underrated DTs to go thru Ohio State.

I completely agree. The man was a monster. His name got caught up, IMO, with the jumbling transition of defense personel in 2003-2004. Not to mention, Bobby Carpenter and AJ Hawk garnished (well-deserved) attention on defense since their first starting seasons in 2003. Green had kind of the Mike Kudle effect - a bad ass player that just got overshadowed.

Training camp can be a rough time for a rookie. That's why Marcus Green is happy to have Barry Cofield around.
Green, an undrafted free agent from Ohio State, has spent much of his time in Albany with Cofield, his Big Ten rival from Northwestern but his friend of four years off the field. The two defensive tackles met as freshmen through Rob Sims, a rookie guard for the Seahawks who played for the Buckeyes and knew Cofield from their high-school days.
"It makes it easier because he's a real funny guy," Green said of Cofield. "When we're out there on the field, he keeps you laughing even when you're tired. He just keeps it funny and real interesting."
While Cofield is almost a lock for a roster spot as a fourth-round pick, Green is fighting the odds to stick as a free agent. He clearly expected to get drafted -- especially since six Ohio State defensive players were selected -- and was disappointed to not hear his name called.
But as soon as he saw only three defensive tackles were taken on the first day of the draft, Green began preparing to work for a roster spot as a free agent.
"I knew I might be in trouble because the defensive tackles weren't coming off the board like I thought they would," he said. "I was real disappointed, but I have an opportunity here to make this team and contribute. That's all you can really ask for."

Defensive line. Many of them weren't even on the field for the afternoon session. But their collective efforts have been so impressive the past few days that these big boys deserve some individual recognition. Here's how they've been lining up, from left end to right:

First unit ? Patrick Kerney, Rocky Bernard, Chuck Darby, Bryce Fisher.

Second unit ? Darryl Tapp, Craig Terrill, Russell Davis, Brandon Green (but Tapp and Green have been alternating sides).

The pairings should change at tackle, however, when Marcus Tubbs begins practicing (perhaps the week of the third preseason game) and if Mebane continues to throw his weight around.

On one play in the morning practice, Mebane rocked center Pat Ross with an explosively quick thrust of his powerful right hand. That's all it took to reposition Ross from the line of scrimmage to a yard and a half behind the line of scrimmage.

The club carried 10 linemen on the final roster cut last season ? four ends (Fisher, Tapp, since-released Grant Wistrom and Joe Tafoya, who signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency this offseason) and six tackles (Darby, Bernard, Tubbs, Russell, Terrill and Chris Cooper, who was released in September and signed with the Cardinals).

The definite keepers this year are the starters, which now includes free-agent addition Kerney; Tubbs, Tapp, Mebane and Atkins. That could leave only two spots, with three players to claim them ? Terrill, Davis and Brandon Green.

If you keep six defensive linemen, the Hawks likely have to make a decision between Craig Terrill and Marcus Green, though it should be noted that Terrill got work with the No. 1 defense today. That decision, of course, affects the secondary, where Jordan Babineaux's health could be a factor and where newly acquired Groce is an unknown factor. Pete Hunter seems to be the other player in the mix there. If you keep five defensive linemen, you can keep eight defensive backs and two of three among Babs, Hunter and Groce. If you keep Terrill or Green, you are down to eight DBs and have to make a decision between the three, though Babs, similar to Womack, is a swing guy who can play both CB and safety, which makes him more valuable. Keep in mind, all this is speculative and a lot of it will be determined in the final three exhibition games.
