Seeing Wells go done with arm tackles, just makes me appreciate Pittman that much more. Pittman goes down, running game goes down!

With the possible exception of the bowl, what game will we necessarily need a big back. We should be fine with Johnson and White in goal-line and inches-to-go situations against Illinois, Northwestern and Michigan who are 11th, 10th and 6th respectively in the conference against the run. By the way, I'm going on the record in predicting Pittman will surpass Clarett's 1237 yards and flirt with 1500 by season's end if he stays healthy.

Pittman is our "power" back because he is an every down back. He has had a great season thus far and will continue to get better with more experience, and more importantly, confidence. He is a well balanced weapon and has given the whole offense balance, as the defense now actually has to worry about the RB. He also takes away carries from the QB which is also a good/great thing for many reasons. Wells is still young and not as patient. He could have bounced out for major yards on Saturday but ran into the pile, because he was too anxious. He has the speed for sure, but is not ready at all to be an every down back. He will be a serious weapon in the future when the game slows down for him. Pittman now has the patience of a vet and we now have our first true every down guy since what's his name (and he was always hurt). A Tressel team with a good RB and OL is dangerous.

I wouldn't call Pittman a "power" back. He may be our main RB and has improved in his durability and tackle-breaking ability, but he's not the kind of back you always want plowing head-first into the line on 3rd and goal from the 2. Wells ran what was called against Minnesota, which were runs into the line to kill the clock. We've seen what Wells can do when he's not playing in clock-killing situations (see Indiana game) and had the option of bouncing outside and also didn't have nine guys in the box expecting the run. Is Wells as good as Pittman right now? No. Would there be a huge a dropoff in talent and production if Pittman got hurt? No. I think Wells would surprise folks if he were to play full time.

Mili, Just because you believe your opinion on Wells does not mean it's valid! Or that my opinion is worthless. I stand by my opinion that if Pittman gets hurt , our running game takes a major hit.

I thought this thread was about who replaces schnit' not pittman. I still feel Dionte Johnson is the pick, with Stan White, Jr. to give Dionte a breather.

Back to the topic....
I think Johnson is the traditional "I" back, and will fill that role from now on until his eligibility expires. Stan White is more of a fullback/tight end....and will be used more in those roles.

When did Dionte last play Runningback (as opposed to fullback)? There are more skills to being a powerback than running straight and bruising... Just check out Lendale White, the prototypical "powerback." He's got the power, but he's also got the vision and that little bit of twistiness to get from the 1 to the endzone.

OK, Rainman, er, Taosman, I went back and rewatched all of Wells' carries over the last two games. There wasn't anything remotely resembling an arm tackle. Here's his carry-by-carry breakdown:
Indiana: 5-yard gain (tackled around legs) 25-yard gain (pushed out of bounds) 2-yard gain (tackled around body) 14-yard gain (tackled around body) 4-yard gain (tackled around legs) Minnesota: 1-yard loss (tackled around legs) 5-yard gain (tackled around body) 2-yard gain (tackled around body) 1-yard gain (tackled around body) 1-yard gain (tackled around legs) 5-yard loss (tackled around body) 1-yard gain (tackled around body) 3-yard gain (tackled around body) He didn't carry the ball in the Penn State and Michigan State games, so later I'll go back and watch the Iowa game and breakdown the nine carries he had in that game. If he didn't get brought down by an arm tackle in that game, I'll keep going back game-by-game until I find an arm-tackle. I doubt if I find more than one, if any, for the season.
