KERR STANDS OUT:@ Rookie linebacker John Kerr, a free agent from Ohio State, made several eye-popping plays during the latter part of the session.

He made one big hit along the sideline, intercepted a tipped pass from Kansas City QB Jeff Terrell and then snuffed out a sweep on the ensuing play to make the tackle.

?He always flies around, sometimes with merit and sometimes we should be going a little bit slower,? Childress said. ?I?d rather have to slow him down. He did a nice job getting his hands on that ball down the middle.?

Kerr is a long shot to make the team at a position that is considered a strength with starters Ben Leber, E.J. Henderson and Chad Greenway and backups Dontarrious Thomas, Vinny Ciurciu, Heath Farwell and Jason Glenn.

But Kerr knows a thing or two about playing behind great linebackers. With the Buckeyes, Kerr has been stuck behind some stellar linebackers the last two years, including A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, Anthony Schlegel and James Laurinaitis.

?It just seems like everywhere I go, there?s amazing linebackers,? Kerr said.

Rookie linebacker John Kerr made another big play early, knocking down a Brodie Croyle pass on a blitz. That came on the heels of a power rush by defensive tackle Howard Green that knocked Croyle five yards into the Chiefs' backfield.

Last year, former linebacker John Kerr failed an NCAA drug test four days before the national title game. The positive test was revealed in a January letter from Ohio State self-reporting a secondary NCAA violation, a letter that stated the same player previously had failed a drug test and been suspended for the entire 2004 season. The document was obtained in a public records request, and though the player's name was redacted, the Plain Dealer confirmed it was Kerr.

Two days before last season's title game, coach Jim Tressel said Kerr was "banged a little bit" and might not be able to play, and Kerr did not play against Florida. But the positive test made Kerr ineligible for the game. When contacted, Kerr chose not to comment for this story.
