Titans sign punter Reggie Hodges

The Titans have agreed to terms with former Jets punter Reggie Hodges.

Hodges will take the place of veteran Craig Hentrich, who suffered a calf injury in Sunday's loss to the Texans.

Hodges averaged 42.8 yards on 44 punts last season for the Jets. He's also played for the Eagles and Rams, with a career average of 40.2 yards.

To make room for Hodges on the 53-man roster, the Titans released cornerback Cary Williams.

"Reggie is going to punt this week and then we'll see,'' agent Glenn Schwartzman said. "I am sure they'll give Craig every opportunity to come back, but it is a great opportunity for Reggie. He's excited to go on Sunday.

"For Reggie it is great for him to join a great organization and go back and punt against his old team.''

Hodges worked out for the Titans on Tuesday along with three others punters including A.J. Trapasso, who was with the Titans during the preseason.

The Titans have also signed Trapasso to the practice squad. Practice squad defensive tackle Mitch King was waived injure

My first thought: holding onto Hentrich is proving to be a disaster for the Titans. I mentioned only a month ago that Hentrich was old and injury prone, and here it is Week 3 of the NFL season and the Titans have to sign another punter, keep Hentrich, and resign AJ too as a backup in case Hodges doesn't work out. In order to carry two more punters on top of Hentrich, the Titans had to release Cary Williams and Mitch King, and there's still no guarantee another team won't come along and give AJ a spot on a 53-man roster, forcing the Titans to let him walk.

All this roster turmoil over an old punter whose best attribute is being a really good holder for PATs and FGs.

My second thought: I'm just tickled to death that AJ Trapasso took Mitch King's job. Unemployment couldn't have happened to a better douchebag.

Titans punter Craig Hentrich isn?t sure what his future holds, but he has a hunch.

Placed on Injured Reserve on Tuesday, Hentrich knows there?s a good chance he?s punted in his last NFL game. But he?s not ready to definitively answer the retirement question.

?I have been saying I?m going to be done for the last four or five years, so I am definitely not going to say that. But I understand that this possibly could be it, especially with the injuries I?ve had this year,?? he said. ?Who knows? I am not going to say yes or no yet, but it?s not looking very good at this point.??

Hentrich suffered a calf injury in the Sept. 20 loss to the Texans. The Titans indicated they were going to try and wait on Hentrich, but when they had two players in the secondary suffer injuries against the Jets, they couldn?t hold his roster spot any longer. They placed him on IR, ending his 2009 season.

The 16th-year pro said he understood. He also said he plans to do everything he can to stick around and help the other punters ? Reggie Hodges and A.J. Trapasso ? and kicker Rob Bironas. The Titans told Hentrich he could travel with the team as well.

Browns punter Dave Zastudil is questionable with a right knee injury, his plant leg.

The Browns tried out four punters Friday: Reggie Hodges, A.J. Trapasso, Britton Colquitt and Glenn Pakulak.
