This whole Plan B stuff is really dependent on your frame of reference. Take a look at Robiskie. Viewed strictly from the perspective of when he got his OSU offer, it would be hard to argue he wasn't OSU's first choice for WR and therefore is a Plan B guy. OTOH, viewed from the perspective of the quality of the recruit, I can't see how anyone who had an offer from the Canes could truly be considered a second tier (AKA Plan B) guy. Put another way, if OSU suddenly offered Turner, the WR from Tennessee (who I don't think OSU has offered), would that be a Plan B offer? Or would than be a Plan B offer (because of timing) to a Plan A recruit (based on quality).

I know this is a touchy issue, because it brings the whole accusation of being a chicken little or the sky is falling freak. But let's face it Washington and Robiskie aren't the Bucks first choices. But then again neither was S. Holmes, he was a late offer as well. You never know. |

Other recent "Plan B" Buckeye recruits are:
Class of 2004 Dennis Kennedy - visited 1/16/2004; never made it into school Curtis Terry - visited 1/30/2004; played as a true freshman Class of 2003 Marcel Frost - visited 1/28/2003; most think that he is a potential star Class of 2002 Santonio Holmes - visitied 1/25/2002; superstar Troy Smith - visited 1/25/2002; star in the making (if he stays eligible...) Brandon Mitchell - visited 1/25/2002; valuable contributor Nate Salley - visited 1/17/2002; star in the making Other late offerees include Chris Gamble (superstar), Donnie Nickey (star), and Mike Nugent (superstar). So, it looks like OSU has done fairly well with late offerees, although I will admit that many of them were offered late because of academic issues (Smith, Frost, Terry, Kennedy, Gamble), and not because of talent issues. Obviously, both Robiskie and Washington have strong academic resume`s, so grades are not an issue with them. |

In previous years, recruits like Washington probably would have been offered months ago (i.e. a "Plan A" recruit). Just because this year, with the more targeted recruiting strategy, he didn't get an offer until later doesn't mean that he's any worse than the typical "Plan A" recruit we looked at a couple of years ago. |

one "plan B" kid has offers from miami, UF, and Stanford.
the other has offers from wiscy, stanford, ill, ind, kentucky etc... had zook not been fired form UF, they would have offered as well. if this is a fallback, then osu is doing pretty well for itself. |

Personally, I would have offered Washington and Robiskie before McCarthy but that's just my personal opinion. I've been a big advocate of DW getting an offer since his name first came out 6-7 months ago. That kid is a bigtime athlete who just needs to be coached up. As for Robiskie, with the offers he has in hand from Coker, Meyer, and Walt Harris, and now Tressel, I wouldnt mind seeing him come aboard. He is also a very bright young man and is the son of a coach. I like that. I think both of these guys would be solid additions, especially Washington.

Just for the record I don't mean to sound like I am denigrating these kids by calling them 'Plan B'. I am only using that in refrence to OSUs recruiting strategy. Robiskie himself said that OSU was open with him that they had other prospects ahead of him and any offer was dependent on how that worked out - thus 'Plan B'.
My original comment was simply a suggest what OSU's strategy might be. That they may not be planning on taking both of these kids but were inviting both for visits to increase their chances of getting at least one. That is in fact the approach that is taken with most kids throughout the year - they extend many more offers than they have ships. |

Donald won the Indiana State Championship in the Long Jump his Sophomore year he was the first person in their state history to do that.
IMO we are getting a raw athlete that can be fine tuned and be one heck of a talent. This is by no means plan "B" nor is it a stretch. IMO in a few years people in the B10 are gonna look back and say "WOW we missed him" |
