Larry Grant

I noticed that you guys locked the topic above. Well Grant will not be a Gator. The UF coaching staff told him that he may want to look somewhere else b/c he can't get into UF. It is a shame because the kid is a stud and wanted to play at UF badly. He just couldn't pass the one test that he need to. Former U of Georgia stud LB Josh Johnson will probably take his place.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm going to keep this locked unless there's indication that OSU is recruiting him, which seems very doubtful.

There's some buzz going around that Grant has tried to apply to OSU and may hear back soon. I'm still very skeptical. One, I don't know how he'd pass OSU admissions but not Florida, especially when NCAA-qualified guys like Lenix couldn't. Two, Tress rarely recruits JUCO's. We'll see what happens.

We'll keep it open for now and see what happens in the next week. Could be a backup plan if Gibson falls through?

bellebuk could go either way
Cleve,
It's not that he couldn't get through Florida admissions. His problem was he didn't have the score on an SEC required math exam.

Plus, I hope this doesn't offend people...but Florida ( I'm not talking about Football because I don't know Florida football well enough but OSU seems pretty hard) is a lot harder to get in to from OOS. Everyone wants to go there and there are tons of kids. I know Princeton Review listed their average OOS SAT on the old test at around 1350...

That said, the SEC math thing concerns me but some kids don't test well or just aren't math oriented. I see absolutely no reason not to take him if he indeed passes our admissions. It would be stupid/laughable not to take him just because he made some mistakes when he was 14-18 years old. Plenty of people do that. Put the positive influence of Coach Tressel around this kid and he will turn it around academically.

Clearly it looks like this kid wants to go to OSU and is trying to position himself for an offer. I have not seen any information from anyone I trust that the staff has a serious interest.

He is smart enough to know an opportunity at a big time program that is graduating 3 starters. Have to give him some math credit there.

Seems this kid clearly wants to stick by the Gators.

Hope I'm wrong, but the story below says no.

City College of San Francisco linebacker has been one of the hottest names on the recruiting circuit this year. The Florida Gator commitment is a five-star linebacker according to Scout.com and was expected to be on campus at Florida as an early enrollee. A math class that is not necessary for most conferences but is for the SEC is keeping Grant from enrolling at Florida for the spring semester.
</td></tr> <tr> <td colspan="3">
(Larry Grant profile) Despite the chance to go elsewhere right away, Grant has decided to finish the math class eventually and become a Gator.
The prevailing thought, including from Grant, was that it was just a matter of a little extra work this week and he would be able to get to Gainesville. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan and that was the case this time. However, Grant won’t let the setback keep him from being a Gator.
“It just means that it is going to take me a little bit more time to get up there,” he said about getting to the University of Florida. “That’s my plan.”
The staff at Florida evidently already knows and has told him to do what he needs to do to become a Gator. They intend on holding his spot for him.
“Everybody knows,” he said about the Gator coaching staff. “They just told me to get the work done. However long it takes, is how long it takes.”
As far as worrying about passing the class again, Grant only has to take the one math class in order to be eligible for SEC competition. He will take it as fast as he can and get to Gainesville as soon as possible.
“I will just have to take the one class this semester, he said. “I am set on my goal to show up at Florida and try to get there mid-semester.”
With only two other linebackers in the 2006 recruiting class, the Florida Gators are looking to sign four. Grant is a huge need for the Gators who lack depth at the big linebacker positions. The 6-3, 225 pound Grant is expected to come in immediately and compete for the vacant strong side linebacker position vacated by outgoing senior Todd McCullough.
The Gators were hoping to add Grant in the spring and that would allow for one extra signee for this 2006 recruiting season. With Grant signing in February and counting against the February totals, the Gators will now probably sign 30-31 prospects in the 2006 class.

I could be wrong, but I think the Fla staff has already told him that he will not be a part of the class because of the SEC required incoming math test score. That has happened since that story came out.
