COLUMBUS - There are not many one-man clubs around. Eventually, somebody comes along and duplicates an accomplishment, matches a record, or just takes it away. For the past 33 years, Ohio State's Archie Griffin has been the "only" player to "ever" win the Heisman Trophy twice. It is a necessary redundancy to group those words together while acknowledging Griffin's matched set of college football's highest award. But in 2007, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win the Heisman, setting him up for possibly two shots at equaling or surpassing Griffin's long-standing mark. The Gators have been ranked as high as No. 1 in some of the early preseason magazines, so in his quest Tebow again will have the strong supporting cast. Griffin, now the president of the Ohio State Alumni Association, said earlier this week that his profound respect for the award prevents him from either pulling for a second Heisman for Tebow, or hoping that the membership in the ultra-exclusive club of two-time winners remains at one

Archie Griffin isn't concerned about it, but plenty of Ohio State University football fans are. This season, the former superstar college running back could lose his distinction of being the only man in history to win two Heisman Trophies as college football's best player.

The threat, as one might expect, comes from the South, where Florida quarterback Tim Tebow rules. He won the Heisman last season and is a strong candidate to win it this year. But Ohio State could have a say in Tebow's chances.

Sid Rosenberg on 790 The Ticket in South Florida interviewed Archie yesterday and ask about the late UF field goal in the Miami game. Rosenberg obviously wanted some kind of negative response to trash Urban and UF. Instead, Archie said it was a a rivalry game, and in rivalry games you try to score big. Even better (for me) Archie said that the UF kicker needed reps so early in the season.

Then the jerk asked Archie if he was rooting against Tebow so that his back to back Heisman record would be preserved. As you'd expect, Archie said not at all. He was amazed that there had been no repeat after all this time, but that if his record had to be matched, that he'd like it to be by someone who Tim, who represents college football so well both on and off the field.

The guy is pure class. What a wonderful representative for tOSU.

Former Ohio State running back Archie Griffin likes hearing that. He's the only two-time winner of the Heisman, winning as a junior in 1974 and repeating as a senior in '75.
"When you win the Heisman, you become a marked man," said Griffin, now the president of the Ohio State Alumni Association. "After I won the Heisman, I got hit extra hard and I even got hit whether I got the pitchout or not on that option pitch we ran all the time. And some tacklers always had some extra to say to a Heisman Trophy winner."
Like Tebow, Griffin found most of the increased pressure after winning the Heisman came away from the field.
"I had a lot of requests to do things," Griffin said. "Our coach, Woody Hayes, called me in his office. He told me, 'You can't do everything for everybody. You're going to have to learn how to say no. All this stuff you're doing right now is going to make you soft.'
"When he told me that, it really hit a nerve. Woody had another saying that was, 'If you're not getting better, you must be getting worse.' I wanted to be the player I was before. It made me want to win the Heisman even worse than the year before."
Griffin said if Tebow calls him for advice on how to handle life after the first Heisman, he'll be ready with a response.
"I'd tell him just to control the things he has control of," Griffin said. "Those things are his work ethic, his mental and physical preparation, and to just go out and play knowing he's on a great team and not everybody is looking at him.
"And he has to be able to deal with all the distractions, all the requests by people who want a piece of him."

MANSFIELD -- Two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin will be the speaker for the 28th annual Buckeye Bash on Nov. 18 in Fairhaven Hall at the Richland County Fairgrounds.
The traditional pep rally for the Michigan game is hosted by The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Richland County.
The bash sold out the past two years, said Kathy Russell, 2008 Bash chairperson and first vice president of the local alumni club.

Archie Griffin's football career at Ohio State teetered after just one drive, one touch and one fumble.
The freshman was listed as fifth string before the 1972 season. When on opening day he got a chance, he fumbled that first handoff.
So it was no surprise when coach Woody Hayes didn't invite him to stay at the team's hotel before the next game. Griffin thought he had made his last carry. He was wrong.
On the bench during Game 2, with the Buckeyes trailing North Carolina, Griffin heard the order: Go in.
The assistant coach in charge of Ohio State's running backs had convinced Hayes that Griffin could be a solid tailback.
That assessment was off. Griffin would become one of the greatest.

You get one of those rare photo ops in his corner office above the sprawling Ohio State campus when Griffin, the heart of Buckeye Nation, meets Miss Sweetheart Ohio.
Just so nine-year-old Kristen Nguyen doesn't think this is just another important person in a big office, Dick Jones tells his granddaughter on the ride over from nearby Westerville that there are just three people in Ohio State football history that need no last name.
Hopalong. Woody. Archie.
Woody is gone and Hop spends some of his time in Florida. But no one before or since has won two Heisman Trophies and no one is on the horizon still. So it is Archie that gets the requests from total strangers to appear at weddings and sign their Buckeyes toilet seats and answer their kids' notebook-paper-letters when it is time to do a report on the most famous people in Ohio.
