Breaking down the Seymour deal
Defensive lineman Richard Seymour made the Raiders' run defense better the moment they finalized the trade with the Patriots on Sunday morning.
Anyone who doubts that should watch film of Trevor Scott and Jay Richardson against the run, or of defensive tackles Gerard Warren and Tommy Kelly on extended drives.
We'll assume Seymour is going to report for duty -- as of after practice Sunday, he had yet to be in contact with the Raiders. How exactly does Seymour make them better, five Pro Bowls and three Super Bowl rings aside?
** He'll start at right defensive end, according to Raiders coach Tom Cable, making him possibly the largest 4-3 end in the NFL (6-6, 310 pounds) since Tommy Kelly started there in 2007. Experience says he will hold the edge better than anyone has here in years.
This allows second-year end Trevor Scott to return to the role he's best at: a third-down pass rush specialist who has full use of his high motor after periods of rest.
The Raiders tried Scott as an every-down end, giving him the job (poorly) held by Jay Richardson last year. Scott simply did not hold up. He could not hold the edge against the run, getting his undersized body shoved around. By the time passing downs rolled around, he was too gassed to speed-rush around the left tackle.
With Seymour and Scott at right end, rookie Matt Shaughnessy and Richardson must fight for snaps behind veteran Greg Ellis on the left side.
