Former Ohio State captain and defensive back Bo Pelini will direct LSU's defense against OSU.

NEW ORLEANS ? Bo Pelini is first and foremost a 1986 Youngstown Cardinal Mooney High School graduate. Since, the LSU defensive coordinator has been many things on different coaching levels.
But listen to him tell it, and Ohio was the most important stop.


"It's about your upbringing, and a little bit culturally," Pelini said. "It's very blue collar, and that blue-collar aspect to you, especially where I come from in Youngstown and the upbringing you have, teaches you a lot of things as far as what it takes to build a football team."

There?s no need to consult Giorgio Armani to understand one of life?s fundamental truths.

Red and purple typically don?t go well together.

I guess it worked out OK, this period during which Bo Pelini remained Louisiana State?s defensive coordinator after being hired Dec. 2 as Nebraska?s head coach. There was never a doubt Pelini would stay with the Tigers through tonight?s Bowl Championship Series title game. And make no mistake ? Pelini absolutely did the right thing in fulfilling his commitment to LSU.

His Nebraska boss, Tom Osborne, fully supported Pelini?s decision. After all, Osborne says, many coaches never get a chance to capture a national title. Amen to that. Plus, a strong defensive showing by Louisiana State tonight against Ohio State?s powerful offensive line obviously would reflect well on the Huskers and perhaps steer a recruit or two toward Big Red.

However, I still think Pelini?s double-dip felt awkward at times.

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana State defensive coordinator Bo Pelini remembers well the last time the Tigers squared off against Ohio State.

Pelini was a free safety for the Buckeyes during the 1987 1988 home-and-home series between the Bucks and the Tigers.

"I remember coming to (LSU) and it was a great environment the day we played," Pelini said. "We played to a tie and I believe Karl Dunbar blocked the winning field goal. Then the next year it was a crazy game at Ohio State. We should have lost that football game, but we were able to pull it out at the end."

He now leads the Tiger's No. 3 ranked defense into battle against heralded running back Chris Wells and OSU. The former Buckeye captain is saddled with the task of taking down the team for which he once fought so hard.

"I played (at OSU) and had a great experience there," Pelini said. "But this is a different time, place and situation. I have a job to do and that is part of being a professional. You have to take your own emotions out of it."

I often wonder if it's an emotional moment when any former Buckeye sees that Scarlet and Gray on the other side. I realize that Bo says that you have to remove the emotion from it. I just imagine that there are sometimes a tugging of the heart strings since those unis meant so much at a different time.

Gotta say hats off to Bo for the gameplan he had and got his players to execute. Also Bo should thank the Buckeye staff for not running Beanie at em about 20 more times. But alas......

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)- Entering spring practice as a first-time head coach, Nebraska's Bo Pelini doesn't have to worry about earning the respect of his players.

Although the old-school Pelini wouldn't concern himself with such matters, it's apparent he has a group of players who are eager to play for him after last year's 5-7 season led to the firing of Bill Callahan.

"I've been going around with this little motto in the locker room 'In Bo we trust, in Bo we trust,'" safety Larry Asante said Monday.

Defensive end Zach Potter grew up in Omaha and well remembers the dominant Nebraska defense coordinated by Pelini in 2003.

"We saw what he did," the senior said, "so we're expecting similar results to that because I think we have just as much talent as they did in 2003."

Pelini, who returns to Nebraska after five years as a defensive coordinator, the last three at LSU, is getting back to basics with the Cornhuskers. Good idea, because the Huskers' defense was statistically the worst in program history last year.

Carl Pelini, Bo's older brother, will have the title of defensive coordinator. But Bo makes it clear that he's in charge of reviving the tradition of the Blackshirts.

Where former coordinator Kevin Cosgrove's repertoire flummoxed some of the players, the Pelini brothers' 4-3 system is simple by comparison.

But several people in the Nebraska program told me Pelini is ramping up the emphasis on academics ? especially class attendance.

Pelini?s overriding philosophy regarding academics and going to class?

?Everything counts in this program, from the time you wake up in the morning until the time you go to bed at night ? we?re going to hold you accountable in every aspect of what you do,? the first-year head coach says.

The 40-year-old Pelini ? a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection as a safety at Ohio State (1988-90) ? says players going to class is ?part of who they are. If we can?t count on them to do the right things off the field, we can?t count on them on the field, either.?

Bo knows Nebraska

I had the privilege of being the guest speaker in Grand Island, Neb., a couple of weeks ago at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet. It was a big deal and my coming to town was supposed to be the story of the day. But fate was not on my side and news came down that morning from Lincoln that the State Fair had just been moved from the capitol city to Grand Island. So, just like in 1993 when we went 11-0 in my very first year at Auburn but my old man won the national championship, I wasn?t even the biggest story on my own special day.
Well, the big story around Nebraska these days is whether Bo Pelini can get the Cornhusker football team back to their winning ways. However, the bigger story may actually be just which winning ways are they talking about getting back to? Is it the level of winning they were experiencing prior to the arrival of Bill Callahan, or are they talking about the winning days of Tom Osborne and Bob Delaney?
There is a huge difference, you know.
Five years ago, Frank Solich was 9-3 in his last year as the head coach at Nebraska. He was carrying a six year record of 58-19 and averaging nearly 10 wins a season. However, he was fired before the bowl game because the administration didn?t like the direction he was taking the program.
