osu DE Alex Barrow (official thread)

Alex Barrow Class:
RS Sophomore

Hometown:
Dublin, Ohio

High School:
Dublin Coffman

Height / Weight:
6-5 / 275

Position:
Defensive End

Birthdate:
03/19/1986

Major:
Communication

Went through the search function and couldn't find a thread on this guy. He's continually impressing me when I see him in the game. There seems to be little to no dropoff when he's called upon.

Time for him to get a thread of his own.

Buckeye Bits: Third-year player with size and ability ... has played only sparingly the past two years, but now appears ready to step in and contribute ... has added 20 pounds since last season and has increased his strength ... helped his own cause with a productive spring practice that made the coaches sit up and take notice ... almost certain to figure in the front-four rotation as a backup to senior Jay Richardson at end ... has 4.7 speed and made a name for himself in high school because of his ability to run down smaller, and supposedly faster, players ... came to Ohio State as a defensive tackle, but end seems to be a more natural position for him ... was redshirted as freshman and saw brief action in six games last year, so he is still learning, but the coaches like his attitude and intensity ... has a chance to be a good football player

2005 (Freshman): Saw action in six games ... totaled 14 minutes, with 8 minutes against Miami (Ohio) in the opener his longest appearance ... also played against Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois and Northwestern ... had two tackles against Indiana and one vs. Northwestern.

2004 (Redshirt): Played on the scout team.

High School: Considered one of the leading defensive line prospects in Central Ohio as a senior, when he totaled 95 tackles, including 27 for loss and 14 sacks, and helped lead Coffman to the regional finals ... earned second team All-Ohio honors as a senior ... notched 44 tackles and four sacks in six and a half games as a junior in a season that was shortened by injury.

Personal: Is the son of Robert and Patrice Barrow ... has a younger brother, Austin, who is a college freshman ... his dad and an uncle, Russell Barrow, both played college football at Ohio University ... calls beating Michigan and Norte Dame in 2005 his greatest thrill so far at Ohio State ... his goal for this year is to contribute in any way he can and for the team to have another successful season.

I don't know how valid the statement is but some "experts" on the bucknuts free forum are stating that Barrow is not going to return for this last season. He is graduating in June and is not transfering, they say that he is just gonna call it quits as far as football is concerned...

Any news on this mods?

Ohio State football: Defensive end won't return
Wednesday, January 23, 2008 3:03 AM
By Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Now two juniors are leaving Ohio State. But Alex Barrow, unlike fellow defensive end Vernon Gholston, isn't headed to the NFL.

"I enjoyed the time I had here in football, but I am ready for the next step in life," Barrow said yesterday.

A fourth-year player from Dublin Coffman, Barrow is scheduled to graduate in June with a communications degree. A job with a marketing, advertising or public relations firm is his immediate goal.

Barrow was considered one of the top prospects in Ohio when he signed with OSU in 2004; he was named the Dispatch central Ohio high-school lineman of the year in 2003.

He has no plans to pursue a professional football career.

"I did have that dream at one time, but what became important to me changed, and that wasn't a dream for me anymore," Barrow said.

When did it change?

"There wasn't a defining moment, it just came from a long thought process, a lot of going back and forth with myself, talking with others about it for quite a while," Barrow said. "It wasn't an epiphany.

"As big as football is around here, it is also important to get your degree and get out there on the job front. Football doesn't last forever."

Sounds like a smart young man. Nice to see a kid understand the importance of a degree. Ohio State is one of the best schools (if not THE best) for preparing kids for the NFL. And yet how many actually make it? Even if they get drafted there's no guarantee. I'd love for every one of these guys to realize their dream of playing on Sundays. But for those that don't, so nice to see a kid like Alex get that degree and go for it outside of football.

Alright, here's a challenge for one of those superstat gurus out there. I wonder what the percentage is of scholarship guys who come to OSU that actually end up playing on Sundays....not just practice squad guys...but actually play in the NFL. I can't imagine it's very high.

Anyway, congrats Alex on 4 years of beating scUM! Good luck out there and remember...always a Buckeye man!
