One thing to consider is that the QB position is different in practice than other psoitions. You hear coaches in the NFL lament having so few snaps in practice for their backup QB's. They say they have very little time to prepare the starter for the scheme and defense they are playing. I don't usually hear this about the rest of the positions. It's possible that the QB position takes so much of the Coaches and starters time in preparation that Smith may not even get the chance to impress the Coaches on the practice field at this point in the season.

College coaches do not have these problems because they have so many more players. Pro coaches have strict roster and practice squad limits they must follow. A pro roster doesn't allow a team to be two deep at every position. For example, a team may have 7DBs, 3 safeties, 3 corners, and 1 emergency DB. When they are hit by injuries they bring in free agents who may not know the play book. The second team QB must split reps with the number one. In college, there are enough players to have the number two QB take as many reps as the number one, albeit with the second team. Obviously, the back-up must take a certain number of reps with the ones in case he must play in the game.

Ok say this is the case, exactly how come Kirk Barton is starting at RT this week? Its obvious Tim Schaefer didnt lose his starting spot in PRACTICE last week, but in the game. So how is it ok for one positions playing time to be determined on game performance, but not another?

So in short we can yell and scream for Troy Smith, but in Coach Tressels' eyes he is not warranting playtime based on how he is practicing.

Ok, so let me get this straight, Tressel is looking for the "best practice QB" and it really wouldnt matter a lick what they do in games because one practices better then the other? Im going to have to call this as I see it, BULLSH*T! Like the example I used earlier involving Barton and Schaefer, if the choice on who starts is truely made on the practice field, then how come Barton is starting this week? The answer is because Schaefer was playing terribly and got pulled, and Barton did an adequate job at filling in. Whats Tressel afraid of? He has to have a reason as to why he isnt playing Smith now, whether it be Smith is in his dog house or not. Because from what he says to the media, and from what is apparent that he is actually doing are 2 different things.

I was a staunch Zwick supporter even up to last week before the Wisconsin game. After watching his performance in that game , I just dont see how he is able to play the entire game without having to sit out a series or two and let someone else try to actually gain some yards. Maybe Smith just isnt the best practice player? Through time there are lots of great players who have been rumored to not be the greatest practice players, maybe Smith is one of them. There have even been quotes in the papers made by players, kind of wondering why Smith hasnt been given a shot. I think that if Zwick continues to play this poorly, and we lose another game or two, that this Zwick vs. Smith arguement could turn into a two headed monster, that could possibly start to divide the team. Thats just my opinion.

How do you know Barton also wasn't doing well also in practice and rating up there with Shafer?? Maybe the gametime showing of Shafer did make the final difference but according to Coach Tressel (not according to me) its earned in practice. I played a very long time in my football career and the first step always always came in practice as to winning a position. The only other way to even get considerations after a season starts is if the starter got hurt, and then you blew everyone away on the field or if you consistantly blew away people in the practices. I am just going by what Coach Tressel has said . I am not for or against Troy Smith or Barton sarting or not. I am only for OSU winning and trying to figure it out just like you osubartender23. Fact is Troy is not playing and alot of people want him to start cuz yes Justin is doing terrible ..... then why isn't he starting ??? Its only speculation on my part as well as yours as to why. I was only quoting Coach Tressels words ... not advocating them myself. Wether its Troy Smith or Justin Zwick, I do not care as long as OSU wins. I do however know its all speculation at best that Troy would do any better than Justin when there are alot of factors involved. I rewatched the Wisconsin game in slow motion recently and Justin had no time to get into any rythme at all because of his offensive line. No excuses though, he did awful when he did throw the ball to open receivers, but again that has alot to do with no rythme, and always worrying about being hit instead of concentrating on his check-offs. He also lacks the gametime maturity too, but we all know that and it will come. No excuses though, he does have to step up. That was my point ...

I think you misunderstood my position on this whole thing. If you look back before the Wisconsin game I was one of those posters who stated Justin Zwick has got to step it up and mature before OSU will do well and win. He has to make better reads and make the defenses pay for cheating up and stacking the line with 7 and 8 players (not the case with Wisconsin though). He also has to learn that he doesn't have to hit the home run ball all the time. I think whomever gets in there as QB has got alot of maturing to do and any QB would struggle with all our Offensive line troubles. Yes I also would love to see IF Troy could do better as long as OSU WINS !!! My position is that both the Offensive line and especially Justin have to mature a heck of alot more before we have a championship team. The O-line has got to be alot more consistent and that's just as much a part of the problem than that QB issue.

My .02

1. Bellisari was supposed to be a great practice QB as well. We all know that didn't often carry over to saturday.

2. After SB's DUI, Scott McMullen was named the starter and CK the backup due to their practice performance's. Once the smoke cleared from the '01 Illinois game it was clear that, much like SB, Scotty Mac was a better practicer where as Craig Krenzel was a better gamer.

3. From reading betwen the lines and just flat reading Barton's comments on the Ozone, it's pretty clear a lot of the guys have a lot of faith in Troy Smith. Some guys are natural born leaders and some aren't. I am getting the feeling the players might respect JZ because of his position and JT's backing. I think they may respect Troy Smith just because of who he is.

All in all, I am having a hard time believing that TS doesn't deserve a shot under game conditions. As we have all seen many times in sports, some guys come alive under game conditions and some guys regress.

I am afraid we are seeing a replay of the McMullen/Krenzel scenario but with the practicer getting the nod over the gamer. Give him some meaningful PT and we'll know for sure one way or the other.

Guys we are not going to see Troy very much unless we start blowing some people out early which we know wont happen. JT has his mind set that JZ is the QB of the future and he will give him as many looks this season as possible in order to gain experience for the next two years. It might not be fair to Troy but that is the way it is.

From Tressel's recent comments, I believe we may well see some of Smith against Iowa tomorrow.....whether it is significant or not, I don't know, but Tressel said that Smith has had his best week of practice since before the season started this week....which should also shut up all the people here who say he isn't doing well in practice...
