I'm not saying I agree with all of the NCAA's rules, but like it or not, our players are bound by them. The sad part is, this could've all been avoided by one simple act - "Coach, I was invited to participate in a camp for a charity, is this okay?" It's not as though players do these things 5 times a week.

sportsline.com Ohio State investigates quarterback for possible rules violation COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State is investigating whether quarterback Troy Smith broke another NCAA rule when he attended a football camp sponsored by Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair this summer. Athletic department spokesman Steve Snapp said Wednesday that the school's compliance office is investigating Smith's attendance at the camp. Snapp wouldn't say whether Smith violated any rule. NCAA rules allow players to attend educational or charitable activities as long as they don't miss class and have written permission from the school's athletic director. The rules also prohibit players from lending their names or images to commercial products that appear on promotional materials for these events, and any money from these appearances must go to the educational or charitable agency. McNair holds annual camps in Nashville, Tenn., and Alcorn, Miss., where he played college football at Alcorn State. It's unclear which camp Smith attended. Last year, Ohio State suspended Smith from the Alamo Bowl for accepting about $500 from a team booster. The NCAA also suspended him for the Alamo Bowl along with the 2005 season opener against Miami (Ohio). Smith's status for the rest of the upcoming season hasn't changed, Snapp said. A message seeking comment was left with the NCAA. Contacted by phone at her Cleveland house, Smith's mother, Tracy Smith, declined comment. Smith's transgression with the booster was one of nine charges levied by the NCAA against Ohio State in May. Seven involved the men's basketball program. AP NEWS

SGN sent out a PM to the premium subscribers about a month ago, saying a player might have committed an NCAA violation... and that they would say more when they could. Greg had heard rumblings about Troy, looks like he was right.
While this is not a serious offense, doesn't it change the ballgame a little that he's still serving his suspension and probably on probation?

Wow, just got home from vacation to this madness. And I thought the people in line at Kings Island were angry.....
I hope this is a communication problem between the compliance office and Troy's higher ups...otherwise, this speaks worlds about Troy's character and learning ability. I am his biggest supporter, but we all know that these guys volunteer at these camps with the main reason for going being to meet and learn from Steve McNair. I completely understand this, but I hope he jumped through all the right hoops before he did it.

This doesn't speak to anything about his character or learning ability. It speaks to his ability to inform the AD about volunteering at a football camp.
