Ohio State issued a release this afternoon regarding the ongoing situation involving quarterback Troy Smith and his participation in a football camp in Tennessee in June.

There has been much speculation that Smith, who is already serving a two-game suspension for receiving illegal extra benefits, could face further sanctions for missing class time to attend the camp, sponsored by Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair.

However, OSU's release claims that Smith did not violate NCAA rules. Here is the release:

Ohio State Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Heather Lyke said today quarterback Troy Smith did not commit an NCAA infraction by working at Steve McNair’s quarterback camp in June.

“We have spent nearly six weeks thoroughly reviewing all the information concerning Troy’s employment at Steve McNair’s camp,” said Lyke. “After talking to a number of key people and collecting the necessary documentation, we were able to determine there were no NCAA rule violations. We have been in contact with both the Big Ten and the NCAA and they concur completely with our findings.

“Anytime we receive information on a possible violation, we look into it thoroughly. While this incident only became public recently, we have been reviewing it since early June.”

Lyke noted that NCAA Bylaw 12.5.1 did not apply in Smith’s case.

“Troy’s participation in the camp was permissible student-athlete employment and is not a promotional activity,” she said.

Even though there were no Big Ten or NCAA rule violations committed by Smith, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel expressed disappointment over his quarterback’s decision to attend the camp at the expense of missing a class.

“Anytime a student-athlete misses a class, it is unacceptable,” said Tressel. “Troy understands how I feel about the situation and knows there will be consequences.”

6 a.m. conditioning drills is exactly what I thought of when I saw that there was no violation, but JT is still saying there will consequences.

I don't care if he starts the Texas game, but I'm sure happy that it looks like he'll be available.

Good I'm glad to hear that they finally came to a conclusion on thisa nd it worked out to be in our favor. Hopefully TS will get his act together and start to dot his I's and all that good stuff.

Its not like Smith hasn't been in trouble before....so I highly doubt that Tressel takes his consequences lightly. You don't cross the coach too often, as evident by Tressel suspending MoC for a season. I think it will be more, and should be, then just conditioning at 6am. Smith brought my bad PR to OSU, even though he was cleared. It wasn't the NCAA that Smith should have been worried about, its the head coach and AD. People forget....Tressel had a team meeting and called out players who have been in trouble....basically telling them to stay out, or else. If he doesn't stand by his word.....it will send a poor message to the team that basically, you can screw up and get away with it. So I look for more then just a good "whipping" with this consequence.

May want to take 5-10 lbs off Troy's roster weight allowing for the portion of his ass that is now missing and water weight he will for sure lose running laps around the shoe while chanting "I will not miss class again.....I will not miss class again....I will not miss class again" JT- I can't hear you Troy....... Excellent news. Maybe one of these days Smith will be able to make decisions that don't make him look like a fool.

Great news there are no additional violations and I expect Coach Tressel to handle this properly. Hell, I expect Coach Ginn will be giving an earful to Troy as well.

Something like this at any other school wouldn't even have made the news. I'm glad that the NCAA cares about Smith doing this as much as I do. Just let the guy live his life, and hope he makes good decisions on and off the field in the future. But it's going to be hard for him to do that if he's under such a microscope all the time...I feel for the guy.

I can see it now: the article in SI or on ESPN next February or March about something dumb, like "Unnamed Woman Spends the Night in OSU QB's Apartment." Or "OSU QB Smith Seen in Hallmark Store; He's Late for Mother's Day." Or "OSU QB Seen Buying Box of Condoms; HE'S NOT MARRIED!"

I think ESPN is already only inches better than The National Enquirer when it comes to credibility.

I think the staff bumps his ass down to #2 QB--or lower--because of his poor decision making and lack of leading by example. Either Boeckman or Zwick (most likely Boeckman per "rumors") will now be the #1 QB, and not just during Smith's remaining one-game suspension.

espn.com (our favorite website) is reporting that TS was cleared by OSU of any wrongdoing. OSU cleared him and the Big Ten and NCAA agreed with OSU's findings.

OSU said they've been looking into this over the last 6 weeks... I'm surprised it took so long to get out to the public...
