Hahaha on MNF, Steve's list of the top 5 QBs comes up...

And after the likes of Peyton, Carson, et all., guess who's number 5?

Troy Smith. Amazing.

Yeah, I just saw that and was going to post about it. I knew Steve Young was one of my favorite players for a reason. Good stuff.

E$PN debates whether or not scUM deserves another shot. Here is the conclusion...

...it's all good either way

Troy Smith will be in Glendale no matter what

Talk about punctuating a Heisman season. Saturday's game showed the story behind Smith's numbers – it's hard to think of the last time a college quarterback has looked as in control of games as Smith does. His posture is perfect, his timing precise, his patience virtuous. While Vince Young's legend was built on the uncommon ability to react to what was thrown at him, Smith seems to know what's going to happen before it does and is simply buying enough time to do what he wants to do. It's breathtaking; anyone who misses his last game must not have a clue.

And anyone who thinks Michigan, USC or any other team not playing on Sundays could beat Smith and the Buckeyes is foolish.

No matter the opponent, the next Heisman winner and the next national champion are Must-See TV.

Todd McShay places Troy on his "stock up" list this week ...

Smith completed 21 of his 26 passes during a first-half showing reminiscent of Vince Young's unforgettable second-half performance in Texas' Rose Bowl defeat of USC for the national championship last season. The senior gunslinger finished with 316 yards and four touchdowns in the 42-39 victory over archrival Michigan, earning Ohio State a trip to Glendale, Ariz., to play for the BCS championship on Jan. 8.

Smith took several hits from a blitz-happy Michigan defense, yet never seemed fazed. Despite the consistent pressure, Smith was able to see the entire field and distribute the ball among his talented corps of receivers. In the end, Ted Ginn Jr., Anthony Gonzalez, Brian Robiskie and Roy Hall each finished with three or more receptions and a touchdown catch. Finally, all Heisman Trophy discussions should cease. Smith will join Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Howard Cassady, Archie Griffin and Eddie George as the sixth Buckeye to take home college football's top individual honor at the Dec. 11 ceremony. Congratulations, Troy. Well deserved.
On NFL Prime Time, Steve Young just jokingly named Troy Smith #5 on his list of Top 5 NFL QBs for the week.

Ohio State-Michigan lived up to the hype, as did many of the marquee players on both teams. Most notable was the performance of Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith, who continues to be at his best in the biggest games.

Smith's numbers are off the charts in his last two games against Michigan, the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, and at Texas in September. In those four games combined, Smith has completed 69.7 percent of his passes for 1,227 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception. On Saturday, I thought Smith's biggest drive was immediately after Michigan took a 7-0 lead. He kept plays alive with his feet and completed nine of 11 passes to six different receivers to tie the score at 7-7.

Going forward as it pertains to next April's NFL draft, Smith's height could become a question as to whether he goes in the first or second round. He has not officially been measured by the NFL -- that will happen at the NFL combine or during an all-star game if he plays in one. Listed at 6-foot-1, is Smith more in the mold of Drew Brees or Shaun King? (Both were second-round picks and are about the same height as Smith.) Right now, I would project Smith to go between the 25th and 45th pick.

Three of Smith's nine completions on the opening drive went to senior wide receiver Roy Hall, including a 1-yard TD pass. Hall has been playing in the shadows of Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez at Ohio State, but his size (6-2?, 238) could make him a late-round prospect if he runs well in pre-draft workouts.

On defense for the Buckeyes, I was impressed with defensive end Vernon Gholston (four tackles), who showed good pass-rushing moves and closing speed. He even gave Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long trouble at times.

I remember tuning into Herbie's radio show in Columbus on NSD 2002. That segment really struck me because Herbie mentioned how big names such as Derek Morris may not pan out as well as the little guys such as Troy Smith. Herbie was also the first guy to make the Warren Moon comparison. He was right on in his evaluation of Troy Smith.

just thought i would point out that on the NFL scale, Troy's passer rating for the season is 119.75 and for The Game (just '06) it's 115.5.

Peyton manning leads the NFL with a 100.5 rating.

i had some other stuff i wanted to say, but in reading all the tributes, i kind of went numb a little. well, maybe numb isn't the word, but something i can't put my finger on.. i mean i KNOW how special Troy Smith has been, and i KNOW how great the story is, but at the same time i am fearfully humbled by the magnitude of it all... i have a feeling that it will take me some time to REALLY appreciate how unbelievably awesome this ride has been.

thank you Troy, and thanks Coach Tressel. for everything...

man its great to be a Buckeye!

Troy by Down - End of Regular Season

Well, I still haven't figured out where Troy's 2 extra yards came from. As you may know, I've been keeping track of his stats all year, and every week my numbers for each game have matched the official numbers. And yet last week the people doing the official stats gave Troy 2 extra yards in his total after the Northwestern game. The table below therefore shows Troy with 2 fewer total yards than you will see elsewhere. If I ever find out where the extra 2 yards came from, I'll edit as many of these "Troy by Down" posts as necessary.

Down....Comp...Att......Yds....TD....int....RATING
1st......74....109......962.....8.....2.....162.58
2nd......73....104......892.....9.....1.....168.87
3rd......51.....83......640....13.....2.....173.08
4th.......1......1.......11.....0.....0.....192.40
overall.199....297.....2505....30.....5.....167.82

The two yards that I'm missing cost Troy 0.056 points in overall efficiency.

Some things of note:
  • Troy's rating is higher on each successive down. Can you say clutch?
  • In The Game, Troy was actually better on first down in the second half than in the first half. As with all other games, Troy had fewer attempts on first down in the second half than in the first (8 in the first, 6 in the second).
  • Troy had 2 incompletions on 2nd down in the first half. He started the 2nd half with 2 incompletions on 2nd down.
  • Troy had 1 incompletion on 3rd down in the first half. His first 3 attempts of the 2nd half resulted in 2 incompletions and an interception.
  • Troy's final pass in Ohio Stadium was a 13 yard TD pass to Robiskie on first down. It was his longest first down pass of the day. It was also his only TD pass of the 2nd half.
  • Troy attempted 26 passes in the first half against TSUN.
  • Troy attempted 15 passes in the second half against TSUN.
    • 2 fewer on first down, 8 fewer on second down, 1 fewer on third down
This last point should not be interpreted as a lack of aggressiveness in play-calling in the second half. Tressel used the pass to open up the running game by design, and to say that he did it better than anyone else had versus TSUN all season is understatement to an embarrassing degree.

How happy are the weasels now that Troy is gone from their regular season schedule???

I personally HATE to see him go, but at a school like tOSU, it's always a thrill to see who's up next. All the love for Troy, hope he has a great NFL career, but he has accomplished all he can (when we win the NC) all he can at this level and it's time for him to move on and improve (scary).

So who's next? Will it be Boeckman and his 3 years of experience? Schoenhoft with the cannon & size or Henton with his mobility and young buzz? We'll see. Right now though, how about Troy throws for another 4 TDs in the NC and we embarrass our #2 ranked opponent.

For the pro scouts, Troy Smith is listed at 6-1. Height is ridiculously overrated when it comes to analyzing quarterbacks and it shouldn't matter one iota for Smith at the next level. However, I'm 6-2 on the nose, and I easily could've slapped the top of Smith's head Benny Hill/old man style. Even so, explain to me why he'd be better at 6-0 than he will be at 5-10 and some change.

The problem with the height speculation is that if Troy Smith is really in the 5-10 to 6-0 range, that means Tress tops out at about 5-6.

FWIW, I believe JT is 5'6"-5'7" no taller. My mom met him in Lima, Ohio.

I know that TS has the most TD passes in a single season as an OSU QB. What is his career TD and how far away is he from the career leader? Does he have any chance of surpassing that?

Also, what are his yards total? I think Schlichter has most yards. Has he become the 2nd highest passer in OSU history?
