hammer, you can only receive gifts, technically, from immediate family members..meaning, parents, spouse, and siblings. other family members can give but it has to be miniscule and they can't have any connection to the university.

I would say it probobaly has more to do with the gift.

This is from Goofy in the "Rumor Mill":

Why would we expect this to be reported on ESPiN? It appears to be a genuine news story. EXPiN is in the fiction category.

steve, I'm wondering the same thing. I thought for sure ESPN would make this the front story with a picture of Clarett with the first thing said being..."Smith kicked off team for unknown violations. Clarett was seen with Smith playing raquetball together in 2002. Clarett's recent allegations about possible, blah, blah, blah.
I friggin hate ESPN but I also can't stay away |

"Much like the same conclusions of innocence/mild indiscretion that you are jumping to after reading an ambiguous article?"
Exactly OSUgrad! I guess I am just an optomist. Really I feel that if it was a "serious transgretion" AG and JT would have kicked him off immediately. I just do not think he took thousands of dollars from a booster. If that were the case he would be gone.<!-- / message --><!-- sig --> |

"The rule on "friends" is, you have to have a relationship with that person before you ever set foot on a college campus. You cannot participate in recruiting, etc...if you give any money to the university, you cannot give money to an athlete regardless of your relationship with him. If you are considered one of those friends before you ever went to college, you can pretty much give that person whatever you want as long as that person stays away from the university."
confused... because didn't MoC's problem originate from a friend he had years of relationship with... almost as a caretaker.. yet since he was not family... it was against the rules? |

If it is in fact the ring on ebay, how would that be an NCAA violation? I mean, it is his ring. The ring is not owned by the university, or NCAA. Once its given to him, its his to throw away, leave in the box, or wear proudly, or sell. I dont see how if he decided to sell it, that it would be an NCAA violation? Now a team violation might be something totally different, if say Tress heard about it and suspended him like those SEC (forget which school) kids were last year?? 2 was investigate allready, so id say 3 is the most probable. |

It's all cool, Goofy! No worries! I expected exactly the same thing. I am boycotting ESPiN, but that's my personal view. We all do what we can do and that's cool. They are broadcasting the Alamo Bowl here and I will be watching with some other Buckeyes.
Don't be surprised if ESPiN aren't working another angle, if this is indeed as minor as it now sounds. They love to play the contrasts, because that is what really gets attention. Just when we relax, in they come again middle of next week with another scandalous allegation with no real evidence. On the other hand, if it's not minor, as rumored now, then ESPiN can try to play "fair reporter" by holding back and then lambasting Geiger, Tressel and the University. So, either way, I will not be surprised to read on BP that some ESPiN article is pointing out that Tressel's mother had tea with Smith's relative back in 1991 in Coral Gables, at which time they got the okay from Mrs Clarett to put the masterplan into motion. I don't hate ESPiN. I just think that the entertainment business that they are in has nothing to do with journalism. Their's is the lowest form of innuendo and character assassination. But my views on them are well known! Money from a family member is one thing and it would be understandable if Smith made a mistake in this regard. And I must say, I do think he is our best chance at quarterback. Money or goods from a booster, even to the value of $100, is different matter and should lead to an immediate expulsion from the team. I agree fully with Milli's sentiments expressed earlier. Zero tolerance. Of course, it would be wonderful is this turns out that Smith's discretion is of such a nature that the press says that Ohio State has over-reacted again. That would start giving OSU a "zero tolerance" image that would be good for the current situation. Still, until this is clearly explained, I guess we all wait! Quote:
