No confidence and Zwick and Boeckman? It's not like Troy's our only offensive weapon.

Actually one could argue that we get to see more of the other weapons with JZ or TB at QB. TS runs a lot when the other two would throw the ball.

If he's going to deviate from that plan, he needs to have sense enough to ASK HIS COACH about it BEFORE he does it.
Troy has as much responsibilty to know the rules as the coaches have to inform him of them. The evidence shows Troy failed to do his due diligence. All you're doing is assuming the coaches failed as well. No one is more responsible for the decisions we make than ourselves.

It just seems that the team is not going to be able to count on Troy Smith.

My sentiments exactly. Being the starting QB is more than just being a fast runner and having a strong arm. It's also about being a team leader, and making smart decisions. Troy needs to step up in both of those areas.

Regardless of the wide variation of opinions here, from what has been reported it seems that Smith did indeed violate one NCAA by-law, and that was failing to get permission to go. We still don't know about his missing class. No matter what we think about the validity of NCAA rules, they are still the rules, whether we like it or not.
That being said, it appears that Smith didn't know he had to tell someone that he was going, and he probably thought that because he wasn't going to miss any classes (and hopefully his not missing any classes proves to be true). If his failing to notify proper officials of his intention to attend is the only violation, I don't see much happening. In fact, as pointed out earlier, had he not taken that booster payment, we may not even be hearing about this. The thing that will cause any penalty at all to be handed out for this is the fact that Smith is already on suspension.
As for us not having a chance against Texas without Smith, whoever thinks that can turn in your BP membership right now. Zwick impressed with his gutty performance in the Alamo Bowl and I can't wait to see what Boeckman has (some were saying he was the best QB in spring practice). We'll be fine with whomever is taking snaps for us on Sep 10th.

I hate the absurdity of these rules, but I agree with Mili, rules are rules. I also agree with Misanthrope, Smith knows he is under the spotlight. In that situation, in a leadership position on a team that is just coming out of one of the largest sports proctology exams ever, you ask before you do anything unusual. If the speculation is right about not asking, then he does bear responsibility.
I do think that we need to give this some room to age a bit. He may or may not have asked the right person, may or may not have asked the wrong person thinking it was the right person, may or may not have missed class, may or may not be penalized...
Either way, as I said earlier, I don't buy the notion that we lose to Texas even though I think he is our best quarterback. Texas is used to a mobile quarterback, Smith is dangerous, but so are our other two quarterbacks.

I completely agree with this. If your counting on just smith to win that game then your "putting all your eggs in one basket" and forgetting that the Bucks are a team. We've seen plenty of games with players out due to injury or suspension and have done just fine.
