I was absolutely shocked to see Russell with a passer rating above Smith last night. No question the guy is a specimen, but I just don't see him as the kind of guy who can manage a football game.
Kieper is probably right. Happens every year, people throw away on field performance and get wowed (or un-wowed) by numbers like a 40 time and height and such.
Edit: Early in the year... after the Texas game, I think.. I heard Kieper say that in his opinion Troy Smith would be the #1 QB taken, ahead of Quinn. I guess Mel didn't realize that Smith is a shrimp at the time.

Kipers said that Russell would go so high because defenders have trouble getting him down and that he can complete passes with people on his back.
Hmmm, I can't ever remember Troy doing that. Russell is just the flavor of the week for him.

Daunte Culpepper isn't even the poor man's Daunte Culpepper w/out Randy Moss.
That said, I like Russell's game. But can you see that guy leading his team to the Super Bowl? I think not. Pass. |

Smith didn't crack Kipers list of top 25 SR's until after the tsum game while Quinn was high on it all season. I can't believe he would have said that. Possibly another talking head, but I doubt it was "the hair". His articles are arcived if you have insider, so you could look that up. |
