Is a Heisman jinx hurting Troy Smith's draft stock?
By Jim Corbett, USA TODAY
Think there's uncertainty projecting where JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn will be drafted?
Try forecasting where Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith will land.
TABLE: Is there a Heisman jinx?
The quarterback's stock took a roller-coaster ride from a career high of winning the Heisman after leading Ohio State to a 12-0 regular season and the Big Ten title to a forgettable finale against Florida in the Bowl Championship Series title game.
Winning the Heisman doesn't guarantee NFL success, especially for quarterbacks. Sure, there are Southern California golden boys Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. But there also are Jason White, Eric Crouch, Danny Wuerffel, Gino Torretta, Chris Weinke and Andre Ware.
Where will Smith fall?

In this article, Mike Mayock said that: "The reason is that he makes about 80-90% of his plays outside the tackle box." I don't have the video clips with me, but it seems this estimate is way too high. At least when considering the TD passes, he made plenty of them down in the middle or to the outside to Ginn from the pocket.
Anyone can provide a more technical analysis?

I don't feel like watching it becuase I don't have time and it brings up some bad memories, but here is Timbuck2's video of all his TDs last year.

I just watched them and plenty of them are from the pocket.
I guess I was being too modest in questioning those numbers. You don't complete two-thirds of your passes and 80~90% are outside of the box. That's just impossible. I guess people are getting out of excuse to bring Troy down.
Well, Troy is one of my most favorite players and I just hope he lands in the right team. Good luck to him!

when i heard you say 80-90% my first reaction was no way. the younger TS maybe, but the 06 version was very poised and made tons of plays from the pocket.

Exactly. The younger TS was still nowhere near 80-90%, but 06 Troy was a pass first, scramble second qb.

Anyone who is interested in a Drew-Brees-Comparison can take a look at what Drew has done at Purdue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7_xy4s_nLI. I don't think anyone watches these films, homer or not, can say that Drew is clearly better than Troy. What strikes me the most actually is how similar they look!
