hammer, you can only receive gifts, technically, from immediate family members..meaning, parents, spouse, and siblings. other family members can give but it has to be miniscule and they can't have any connection to the university.

This is from Goofy in the "Rumor Mill":
Quote:
Immediate family is defined as parents, siblings, and spouses....the NCAA doesn't do anything to athletes that accept something from other family members with whom they've had a relationship with before they enter college. Aunts or uncles can buy gifts, they just can't get crazy about it. Athletes are told that if there is any question, go ask a coach. NCAA defines it as immediate family only, but there is leniancy...to an extent.
The rule on "friends" is, you have to have a relationship with that person before you ever set foot on a college campus. You cannot participate in recruiting, etc...if you give any money to the university, you cannot give money to an athlete regardless of your relationship with him. If you are considered one of those friends before you ever went to college, you can pretty much give that person whatever you want as long as that person stays away from the university.

If the last one is correct is is funny, I mean hilarious. That is unbelievable if true.

I assume you mean 1 or 2 not 3. If so, I totally agree with you. When will these kids learn??
I have also heard a scenario of selling signed merchandise to someone for cash. Anyone else heard this?

Why would we expect this to be reported on ESPiN? It appears to be a genuine news story. EXPiN is in the fiction category.

steve, I'm wondering the same thing. I thought for sure ESPN would make this the front story with a picture of Clarett with the first thing said being..."Smith kicked off team for unknown violations. Clarett was seen with Smith playing raquetball together in 2002. Clarett's recent allegations about possible, blah, blah, blah.
I friggin hate ESPN but I also can't stay away

"Much like the same conclusions of innocence/mild indiscretion that you are jumping to after reading an ambiguous article?"
Exactly OSUgrad! I guess I am just an optomist. Really I feel that if it was a "serious transgretion" AG and JT would have kicked him off immediately. I just do not think he took thousands of dollars from a booster. If that were the case he would be gone.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
