What is so great about this thread is that we have two proven starters who can win, that ladies is a great situation.

On ESPN's site, they have an article on Smith. But its premium access only (I'll be damned if I give then a friggin' cent). Anyone have a synopsis?

Article on Troy Smith's Starting Status

QB Troy Smith's problems could affect his ability to start at Ohio State, and they have nothing to do with the potential ramifications of accepting money from a booster. They have everything to do with trust and accountability. Can Ohio State trust that Smith--who has a history of off-field issues, including a disorderly conduct charge in 2002--will steer clear of trouble? Can the Buckeyes pin their offense on a player who likely is one misstep from ending his career? Many believed Smith should have started ahead of Justin Zwick at the beginning of last season and that Smith's off-field problems swayed coach Jim Tressel toward Zwick. It could be the same case this fall, especially if Zwick makes strides during spring practice. . . .
Alabama is determined to find a suitable backup for QB Brodie Croyle, even if it means developing a walk-on. Spencer Pennington, who has left the team to concentrate on playing baseball full time, was serviceable as Croyle's backup last year, but had he played more efficiently, the Tide could have had eight or more wins. The team had hopes for Miami transfer Marc Guillon, but he hasn't recovered sufficiently from a back injury, and there are concerns it could be a long-term issue. That leaves Alabama with one scholarship quarterback (John Parker Wilson) and walk-on Adam Thrash competing in spring drills. Croyle will not participate in contact drills while rehabbing a reconstructed knee. . . .
The NCAA's new academic measures will ensure at least one thing: Teams will be more selective when signing academically marginal players. The danger of losing scholarships because of players who fail to graduate could impact multiple seasons. One elite player--who might or might not pan out--isn't worth the risk. "You're not going to totally eliminate marginal kids from your sights," says one Pac-10 coach. "A few years ago, you could take five or so chances every year. You can't do that anymore.". . .
Fresno State coach Pat Hill says this team should be his best ever at the school--even better than the David Carr-led 2001 team. The Bulldogs will need all that talent with a nonconference schedule that includes Southern California, Oregon and Toledo. By the way, Hill--who votes in the coaches poll--says he'll start his team out "around No. 15 or so" in this year's preseason poll. . . .

Odds are he'll lead the nation in a few passing categories by the end of this season. Last fall, Gill was a junior college player hoping to land a Division I scholarship. By the end of April, he'll likely be New Mexico State's starting quarterback. New Aggies coach Hal Mumme calls Gill "the perfect quarterback for New Mexico State." Translation: Gill will throw it about 50 to 60 times per game this fall. . . . New Auburn coordinator David Gibbs says he won't change much about the system that produced one of the nation's best defenses in 2004. There will, however, be one fundamental tweak: Auburn will play more bump-and-run and press coverage than it did last season. Pressure from DEs Stanley McClover and Quentin Groves will allow CBs Montavis Pitts and David Irons to play aggressively. . . . Arizona State's recent success with junior college players on defense has the staff thinking as many as three JC transfers from last month's recruiting class could start this fall, including LB Beau Manutai, S Zach Catanese and CB Keno Walter-White.

His comments are not out of line, the question is wether the staff can trust Troy again....I think we are fortunate to have Justin Zwick in the fold.
