Knight: Rule affects 'integrity of college sports'
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The new rule that says players must be at least one year removed from high school before entering the NBA is "the worst thing that's happened to college basketball since I've been coaching," says Texas Tech coach Bob Knight.
In the Big 12, it might be called the Kevin Durant Rule after the Longhorn freshman who has electrified the entire country and leads the conference in both scoring and rebounding. Instituted last year by the NBA, it means that super-talented players must wait at least a year rather than jumping into the pros right out of high school. "Because now you can have a kid come to school for a year and play basketball and he doesn't even have to go to class," Knight said Monday during the Big 12 coaches call. "He certainly doesn't have to go to class the second semester. I'm not exactly positive about the first semester. But he would not have to attend a single class the second semester to play through the whole second semester of basketball. "That, I think, has a tremendous effect on the integrity of college sports." Entire article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2771573 |

This is just "Bobby being Bobby":
Big 12 reprimands Tech's Knight for comment on officiating LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas Tech coach Bob Knight was reprimanded by the Big 12 for comments he made about officiating after a loss to New Mexico earlier this month. The reprimand, issued Monday, resulted from Knight's arguing about Lobos freshman Dairese Gary's one-handed 47-footer at the halftime buzzer in New Mexico's 80-63 victory Dec. 15. Knight didn't think Gary released the shot in time. "I thought it was a horrendous call," Knight said after the game. Knight's comment violated the Big 12's sportsmanship code, which prohibits public comments about officiating, the conference said in a statement. You'd think Knight could figure out that, after losing by 17, this half-court heave was not the proximate cause of his team's defeat. But his reasoning powers do not appear to have improved with advancing age.

Knight downplays his quest for 900 Texas Tech coach will have a shot at the historical mark Saturday against Oklahoma State. By Betsy Blaney Associated Press Friday, January 11, 2008 LUBBOCK, Texas ? Texas Tech's Bob Knight is about to enter a realm occupied by only two other Division I college basketball coaches, and they're both women. When the Hall of Fame coach gets win No. 900, he will join former Texas coach Jody Conradt and Tennessee's Pat Summitt as the only members of the Division I club. Knight's first shot comes Saturday at Oklahoma State. "Oh, who cares about 900?" Knight, ornery as ever at 67, said last week after victory No. 899. That game, a 75-68 victory over UTEP, was marked by his first technical foul this season. He kicked a table after what he thought was a bad call and lost his right shoe. Knight has been a head coach for 42 years at three Division I schools. He got his 100th victory at Army, then moved to Indiana, where his Hoosiers went 662-239 and won three national championships from 1971-2000. His first NCAA title came in 1976 when Indiana went undefeated, a feat no team has done since. In 1984, he coached the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in Los Angeles. Cont... |

In a perfect world Coach Conradt and Coach Summitt would both send congatulatory wishes to Coach Knight, and remind him, that in his own life, if "Rape is Inevitable" then he should just "Bend-over and enjoy it."

College basketball roundup: Knight collects 900th victory Thursday, January 17, 2008 3:30 AM ASSOCIATED PRESS H. Rumph Jr. Associated PressXavier's Drew Lavender drives on Temple's Semaj Inge. Lavender, a Brookhaven graduate, scored 11 points. Texas Tech 68, No. 10 Texas A&M 53 -- Bob Knight reached another milestone. Texas Tech beat Texas A&M last night in a Big 12 game in Lubbock, Texas, for the Hall of Fame coach's 900th victory. After the game, fans chanted Knight's name as he walked off the court to a thunderous ovation. "You folks being here, seats being full for a change, really made a difference tonight," Knight told the crowd before leaving the court. The Aggies (15-2, 1-1) looked frazzled and out of sync most of the game. A&M went 18 of 53 (34 percent) from the field in its worst shooting performance of the season and turned the ball over a season-high 20 times. Cont... |

Tom Archdeacon: Laughter the best medicine By Tom Archdeacon Staff Writer Friday, January 18, 2008 OXFORD ? Once Sam Lickliter's heart suddenly went so bad ? when he all but died in the backyard of his Kettering home on New Year's Eve ? Bob Knight showed his heart is pretty darn good. "I got a note yesterday from Knight. How he knew about this is beyond me," Lickliter said as he sat alongside his longtime pal and fellow officiating supervisor, Randy Drury, on Thursday night while they watched Kent State brush aside Miami, 74-62. "Knight goes, 'Heard about your illness. Take care of yourself and do what they tell you,' ... and he adds, 'I always admired you as a referee ... not like those guys today!' " Lickliter was laughing now and so was Drury. Before retiring recently, both were longtime officials ? Lickliter 29 years in the Mid-American Conference, 22 in the Big Ten, Drury 32 in the MAC and 25 in the Big Ten ? and both love to tell the "other" Knight-Lickliter story. Cont... |
