My view of Knight has mellowed over the years. When I was younger, I did not like how he showed up his players on TV and Ithought he was a big bully. As I've aged (and read one of his books) I still think he is a bully, but he is old school, says what he thinks and does not give a darn what people think of him.
He was probably born 25-30 years too late as his style is somewhat taboo now. Bottom line is that he seems to care about his players and is loyal to them, when they are loyal to him. Congrats on 900 wins coach. |

Bobby is a bully lol, but hey he doesn't just bully his players , he bullies everyone. He played BB at tOSU during the reign of ta duh ... Woody Hayes.
Like Hayes he demands the best form his players and tries to get them to excel at all they did, to give 105 % all the time. Yes he did some dumb things but Bobby Is one hell of a man and one hell of a BB coach. |

I think that Bobby is of the opinion that he doesn't give darn what his ex-players think of him as long as they are better people and citizens when he is done with them, and that ain't so bad. |

ESPN reports that Bobby Knight has resigned and will retire.

During the Marquette-L'ville game, they interrupted and announced Bob Knight has resigned as Texas Tech head coach effective immediately. His son was promoted to head coach. Nothing on espn.com at the moment.

Knew it was coming, but in the middle of the season???
ESPN - College coaching legend Knight resigns from Texas Tech - Men's College Basketball |

I figured this would be his last year, but didn't expect him to step down midseason.

Kinda hoping this isn't a health related issue that is causing him to step down like this. With what he has done for college basketball, the least he deserved was a bow at midcourt to a standing ovation. Uncerimoniously resigning and retiring in the middle of the season is awfully odd. Bobby's not your typical coach in many different ways, which might be an excuse for this kind of behavior, but Bobby's no quitter either. Something's not right here.
Me thinks I know what the topic of the day will be tomorrow in the sports world... |

Same here. I knew 900 was a goal and once he got it that would be it, but to not finish the season surprises me.

A buddy of mine very close to the TT program sent me an email saying the retirement is best for everyone involved

well it was said on espn a few minutes ago that knight planned on retiring after this year. the reason he resigned was so his son could take over mid season, so that for next year he was already respected by the returning players and had a good vibe for the recruits he himself will bring in.

And so that is it.
As one of the people here who has watched Knight as a Buckeye player and coach, I am filled with a sense of contradiction and of something that slipped away. No doubt many will note that he shared Woody's temper and many of his values. Others will point to the contradictions (Forde at ESPN already) of a man who demanded that others adhere to values from a time gone by but then sometimes appeared to ignore those same values in his own life. Those contradictions are what define him to many. He is defined in my mind as a Buckeye. A player on our great national championship team during the heyday of Fred Taylor's reign. I hope that this does give his son time to settle in and get his coaching staff ready for next year. And I hope that Bobby Knight can rest and look back on the successes in his career. How I wish he had learned more from Fred Taylor about managing his personal behavior and it had ended differently and that his personality had not obscured his coaching genius. Go well, Bobby Knight. |
