This is really bull[censored] in my book. "Buckwheat" must be dumber than he looks to talk crap like that. Hell, I have more respect for a guy like Derek Ross sitting out a Bowl Game to get his surgery taken care of than I do for a guy who actually plays in a game and doesn't give it his all. I hope this makes it to every GM in the NFL, and that Gamble drops way down.

Giving up 21 in the 4th was more due to the prevent D schemes than Gamble taking it easy. Even still, he played a hell of a game.

It seemed more like Lydell's mind took the 4th quarter off. Running out of bounds with a minute left, I thought Spencer was gonna blow an artery.

Oh what can we say about Chris Gamble

He was without a doubt on of the main heros of the 2002 National Championship season. The Cincinnati, Wisconsin, and most especially Penn State interceptions were monumental. His play in the Illinois, scUM and Fiesta Bowl games, just based on the number of plays he played, was nothing short of remarkable.

And then there was his offensive capabilities....

Chris Gamble in 2003 was different, he was the guy who got beat by a back up qb on a double move in one of the most crucial moments. He got beat like a rented mule, (like the rest of the defense did to be fair) by scUM, and certailnly made too many mistakes IMHO to be considered a 1st round draft pick (unless the good ole bengals than we know and love come back, or AZ is in the market for a corner). This comment however was the dumbest comment he could have ever made.

Professionally how could you say this? If I were an NFL team I would be worried about the effort he would give me then in a contract year?

Personally how could you be a competitor and admidt this to yourself. I know sometimes you sub-concious will do strange things to you but to knowingly do this is unacceptable.

For the sake of your reputation why on earth would you say this?!

The problem is now I can not remember the Gamble I wanted to. The one I described in 2002. Now he will be the player that played not to get hurt, that didn't give us his all. I just don't trust those kind of people, I never will, and if I can't trust you I can't respect you.

The Gamble article is more proof that athletes simply shouldn't answer any questions that don't have to do with the last game or the next opponent. These guys have agents for a reason - let them do the talking!

That being said, I'm sure that a lot of guys do the same thing - why play hard in a meaningless bowl game when you're about to become a millionaire? Derek Ross and LeCharles Bentley both refused to play in the '02 bowl game because they didn't want to risk an injury. I don't agree with it, but I'd be willing to bet that it's a fairly common practice.

I am still amazed about how some people put Gamble ahead of Springs when they are doing all time teams the last 10 years or since 1990 or since Cooper became coach. I felt his play this past season was a disappointment. I will remember the 2002 Gamble but the 2003 Gamble I won't remember. I can not believe he would admit to slacking off during games. Reminds me of Derek Ross in 2001.

I will always support Gamble, simply because he was a Buckeye. This news, while disappointing, is not necessarily surprising. What surprises me more is how high he is expected to be drafted. He had a horrible year at CB this year. I don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere that Gamble gave up more TD's than any other CB in the Big 10. I do know for sure that he gave up more than anyone else on the team. Granted, I see the talent in him, and his potential, but first round seems like quite a risk to any drafting team, based on potential alone.

Having known Chris for many years now, and helping him to choose OSU, I think last year, in general was pretty non-productive.<O</O

First, I will share a recruiting story on him:

Chris was scheduled to come up for the OSU camp in the summer of his JR. year. At that time, it was a 3 day camp. The first day, Chris did not show. I called his Mom and she said he missed the plane from his Aunts to <ST1<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Ft.</st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Lauderdale</st1:PlaceName></ST1 and would be up the next day. Day 2, Chris does not show up. I called back to his house; he was there and promised he would come that day. Day 3, Chris strolls into the facility on to the turf field, with his shoes tied together over his shoulder. I was so relived to see him. At the time he came in, I was standing next to Cooper, and told him this is the kid I wanted him to see and that he was the best kid in <ST1South Florida</ST1<O</O


On this day Cooper was working with the offence. I told Gamble to go jump in and do some reps with the receivers. The first pass was a basic down and out. Chris was there, 5 steps against the best DB on the field. Cooper noticed. The second rep he had, was air-it-out, where the quarterback throws to the end zone. Chris was standing alone waiting for the ball when it arrived. At this point, Cooper calls over <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1Bell-a-sorry</ST1</st1:City>, and tells him to throw the ball as far as he can. Once again, Chris is there to get the ball unchallenged. After these 3 throws, Cooper tells Gamble to go sit down, and that he wanted to meet with him at lunch to offer him a scholarship.<O</O<O</O

A half-hour latter, I am walking around with Cooper, and we hear a lot of cheering and hollering at the other end of the field where the DBs are practicing. In the short walk that it takes us to the other end of the field, Cooper sees this kid intercept 2 passes. He asked an assistant who was doing all the interceptions. The assistant said it was some new kid who had just come in from <st1:State w:st="on"><ST1Florida</ST1</st1:State>. Cooper then starts yelling at Gamble, telling him to get into his office, where Cooper offered him on the spot, starting his 2-way career.

Chris did not receive a lot of coaching at OSU, in major part, because he was going both ways. The majority of his success was due to natural ability. During his junior year, other teams knew what they were up against with Chris. So they could neutralize him a little more. His Jr. Year, he also moved in with his girlfriend and had some personal issues arise in his life. I know no more than the average 20 year old kid. As most know, he was involved in a fight, outside of <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1lincoln </ST1</st1:City>tower. What most people don’t know is that he had recruits Anthony Reddick, Dennis Kennedy and player Nate Salley with him. I'm glad that never got out at the time.<O</O

But in general, Chris had made his mind up about 6 games into the season he was going to go Pro, and then had all those issues to think about. With everything combined on his mind, it seemed every time he would try to pick off a pass or make a great play, he miss judged it.<O</O

I am very, very proud of Chris. All the stuff <ST1<st1:City w:st="on">Auburn t</st1:City></ST1ried to pull at the end of the recruiting process, his dad having huge legal problems, his mom working 2 jobs, I look back and think, how lucky he really was to make it to OSU, and to have such a promising NFL career in front of him, just makes it all worth while.

I prommise that in In the NFL, Chris will get the Coaching to allow him to be insanely successful.

The NFL drafts largely on potential; coaches feel that they can teach technique, and know that they can't teach "measureables". In addition, teams are more likely to reach for "hot" commodities, which in NFL terms are QB, CB, rush DE, and LT. Gamble has sick measureables (cannot be taught), has been at his position for only a year and a half (if he's so good already with so little experience, just wait until the experts get a hold of him), and plays cornerback (a position that every NFL team is always looking for). Add it all together, and throw in the relatively minor facts that Gamble had decent on-the-field production at a top program, and he's a top 15 pick.

I don't agree with the top 15 pick, but I guess we'll find out. I understand the fact that Gamble has those intangible qualities that are looked for in a CB, but at the same time, any NFL team is going to want/expect their first round pick to immediately step into a starting role (excluding most QB's). No way is Gamble ready to start in the NFL--if he tries it, he's toast.

Wow, not sure what I can come up with of equal value. Anything from Ohio you would want? Do you have a copy of "What It Means To Be A Buckeye"

I had Chris Gamble scheduled to speak at the Broward County Alumni Association dinner this weekend. I got a call from his agent, who asked that we not use Chris for this event on Saturday as he is going to rerun his 40 yard for the pro scouts on Monday. I then called Chris and feels that it is a $2 - $5 million difference if he can get his time down. His agent offered Mike Doss, his other client instead. I guess I will have to call David Boston…..
