CORAL GABLES ? University of Miami defensive coordinator Tim Walton will be fired from the position he held for one season, UM sources said Monday.

UM coach Randy Shannon informed high-level university officials on Monday that he planned to fire Walton, but it was unknown on Monday if the coaches had met.

Shannon could not be reached for comment.

"I'm not going to comment on personnel decisions," UM athletic director Paul Dee said during Monday night's basketball game between the Hurricanes and Stetson.

Walton served as the Hurricanes' defensive backs coach for three seasons before being promoted to defensive coordinator after Shannon was named head coach last December.

But UM struggled under Walton, finishing 53rd nationally in scoring defense (26 points per game). The Hurricanes finished the season 5-7 and did not qualify for the post-season for the first time since 1997.

An ailing University of Miami offense was joined this season by something unfamiliar to Hurricanes football fans the past several years -- an ailing defense.

And in response, UM coach Randy Shannon has taken action.

Shannon fired defensive coordinator Tim Walton on Monday, two sources close to UM confirmed Monday night.

Walton, 36, served as defensive backs coach for his first three seasons with the Hurricanes, then was promoted to defensive coordinator before the 2007 season. But UM's defense -- by far its strength for several years -- grew considerably worse as this past season progressed.

CORAL GABLES - The one-year reign of Tim Walton as the Miami Hurricanes' defensive coordinator has ended, according to multiple sources.

After leading one of the worst defenses in recent UM history, Walton was fired Monday morning, sources said. The university wouldn't confirm the move. The 312 points allowed by the Hurricanes were the most since 1984 (314).

The move comes as a surprise, considering coach Randy Shannon repeatedly talked of maintaining stability and said there would be no forced coaching changes. In an interview in late November, Shannon only hinted at the possibility of voluntary departures for those wanting to pursue better opportunity.

Walton to be Tigers' defensive coordinator

Tim Walton will be introduced Monday as the University of Memphis' new football defensive coordinator, according to sources familiar with the situation.

A press conference has been scheduled for Athletic Office Building at 10 a.m. today to introduce Walton.

Walton, 36, a former Tiger assistant, served as defensive coordinator for the University of Miami last season in what was his fourth year as a Miami assistant. He spent the weekend in Memphis re-acquainting himself with the city and a program where he coached defensive backs in 2000 and 2001.

After leaving Memphis, Walton, a former Ohio State defensive back, coached single seasons at Syracuse and LSU before joining the Miami program in 2004. He will replace Rick Kravitz at the U of M. Kravitz was fired last week after one season at the U of M.

Despite University of Memphis coach Tommy West's best efforts to keep him, Tiger defensive coordinator Tim Walton is leaving the program for the NFL's Detroit Lions.

West confirmed this afternoon Walton, 37, will become an assistant on new Lions coach Jim Schwartz's staff, departing the U of M after one season as coordinator. Walton interviewed with the Lions Monday and the former Ohio State defensive back told West today he would accept Detroit's offer to be a defensive assistant.

Walton's departure will have West looking to hire a coordinator the third time in as many years.

``It's a loss for us, but it's compliment to us, too,'' West said. ``When you hire good people this is what happens. It's hard to beat the NFL.''

Walton, in his second stint as a Tiger assistant, earned $180,000 as the U of M's defensive coordinator. He helped the U of M defense yield nearly 100 fewer yards per game than it did in 2007, when the unit was ranked 100th nationally. The Tigers ranked third in Conference USA in total defense last season allowing 353.8 yards per game.
