When the college recruiters -- and they come in droves -- roll through Friendly High School to make their pitches to Lamaar Thomas, most do so with different visions of where he'll line up in their spacious stadiums. Some have him playing wide receiver in college, some at running back, others at defensive back.
Quarterback? Well, that might be next. Last night in Fort Washington, Thomas caught two touchdown passes, rushed for another and threw for the first score of his career to lift top-ranked Friendly (5-0) to a 40-0 victory over Douglass (3-2) in a critical Prince George's County matchup.
For good measure, Thomas recovered a fumble, had two tackles and returned a kick 55 yards.
He played four positions -- quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive back -- and also on special teams.
"I've never done anything like this before," he smiled afterward.
Thomas, who has 31 division I-A scholarship offers, has narrowed his list of possible suitors to Maryland, Ohio State and Illinois. At 6 feet and 180 pounds, Thomas runs a 4.3-second 40-yard dash -- speed that led to his 100-meter victory at last year's Maryland track and field championships -- and has a 2.8 grade-point average.
He's being recruited as a running back, wide receiver and defensive back, and said he doesn't know which position he'd prefer to play.
"He's the best athlete I've ever seen come through Friendly High School," said Patriots running back Josh Haden, himself a blue chip recruit who has committed to Boston College.
