Jets view Gholston as perfect fit

Vernon Gholston took a liking to New York City this weekend on his second visit. That's good, considering it's going to be his new home.


The New York Jets made Gholston, Ohio State's season sack record-holder with 14, their first pick yesterday in the NFL draft. Having forgone his senior season at OSU, the defensive end/linebacker was the sixth player taken overall.
"My first reaction was just the feeling of being blessed," Gholston said afterward. "It's just a joyous occasion. I had my dream come true."
The large contingent of Jets fans in attendance at NFL draft central, Radio City Music Hall, gave vociferous approval of the pick. Gholston reciprocated.

I certainly understand what is being said, I just don't think Vern is that type of player. Some players, like JL, tend to move very well across the field and can play in space. Other guys are space consumers and are more like a 747 (straight-ahead, one purpose) than a fighter jet (agility driven). It's not that there is NO lateral ability, it's just not as prevalent. It's different styles, that's why I don't think you'll see Vern at LB. I've been wrong before, and I'm no Mel Kiper, but I do know a good bit about the game and player evaluation. Either way, best of luck to Vern. My two cents is spent.

Jets expect Gholston to wreak havoc

Here's a little hint, Vernon: It will involve rushing the passer quite often.
Although the Jets signed pass-rushing Arizona linebacker Calvin Pace last month, they still felt they needed more help in that department, which is why they selected Gholston with the sixth overall pick. Gholston, a 6-foot-3 1/2, 264-pound defensive end from Ohio State, had 14 sacks last year and 22 1/2 for the Buckeyes over the past two seasons. He projects as an outside linebacker in the Jets' 3-4 defense.

Coach: Gholston better than his numbers

As Ohio State coach Jim Tressel watched the draft Saturday afternoon and the accompanying video of Vernon Gholston, he was a little bothered.

"You know, in all the highlights on Saturday, I never saw any of those plays where he carried Jake Long into the quarterback's lap," Tressel said in a telephone interview Monday from Columbus.

Tressel wasn't besmirching Long, Michigan's All-American left tackle selected No. 1 overall by the Dolphins, and he was happy his standout defensive end, who will play outside linebacker in the Jets' 3-4 defense, was taken by the Jets. Tressel has had several players do well with the Jets over the years, including Mike Nugent and Nick Mangold.

But Tressel was perplexed at some of the criticisms directed at Gholston before, during and after the draft, his primary objection being the charge that Gholston took plays -- and sometimes entire games -- off.

The one highlight played consistently was of Gholston beating Long for a sack -- the only one Long gave up all season -- but Tressel's point was that wasn't the only play Gholston bettered Long. There just wasn't a sack to show for it.

It was part of the larger point Tressel wanted to make: the reason Gholston's sack and tackle numbers fluctuated was his role in Ohio State's 4-3 defense wasn't always the same. For example, Ohio State occasionally had the speedy Gholston drop into coverage.

"When you're a D-end who is sometimes a drop guy, there are going to be times where you're not going forward," said Tressel, who later in the interview said he didn't see any difficulties ahead for Gholston in the Jets' 3-4 defense. "There are times where you'll be in the scuffle and sometimes when you're out in your zone"

April 29, 2008 -- OK, admit it Jets New York Jets fans. You really wanted Darren McFadden or Matt Ryan.
McFadden could have injected instant energy into the Jets' plodding, one-first-down-at-a-time offense.
And Ryan could have provided a complete start-over at quarterback, an area that came into serious question during last year's 4-12 flop, during which Chad Pennington Chad Pennington was benched and Kellen Clemens Kellen Clemens wasn't exactly impressive replacing him.
All fair and understandable desires, wanting McFadden, potentially the most dynamic, game-changing offensive playmaker in the draft, or Ryan, considered by the so-called experts as the best quarterback available.
Either one of those players would have provided some serious intrigue to the present and future of the team.
But the Jets didn't fall on their face by drafting Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston with the sixth overall pick of the draft Saturday.
They addressed their most significant area of need - their anemic pass rush, which last year scared quarterbacks the way those yapping tiny boutique dogs on the Upper East Side frighten passers by on the sidewalk.

Gholston was exactly the kind of player Jets head coach Eric Mangini needed for his 3-4 defense. The Jets already added two significant defensive players in the offseason -- nose tackle Kris Jenkins and outside linebacker Calvin Pace -- and now they get an explosive pass-rusher with tremendous upside. Sure, several analysts have knocked Gholston for not playing hard on every down, but the Jets will find a way to change that immediately. The bottom line is this kid was good enough to register 21? sacks in his final two years at Ohio State. He'll be just as devastating in the NFL.
