Not sure why they don't have kids squat when they're testing there...

If you are using your hands and arms to bench press, you aren't putting up much weight...grad is right...bench press is probably the least useful measurement when it comes to combine testing. I wouldn't call the 40 useless for linemen...it is somewhat important, but the short shuttle is what is really good for testing burst and agility, which is very useful in the trenches.

of the 4 speed and strength combine workouts i can think of right now(plz add if missing any) i would say that the shuffle is most important of for DT's followed closely by the cones, then bench, then 40 time. although, a good interview and personal background test must be combined w/. which is where Tress and the staff really seem to excel is in their personal evals. they really seem to be seeking out the best combo kids(personally and physical), alot more than some other schools that rely more heavily on measureables and not attitude. Real class act, which is the best compliment.

I'm guess you are referring to a lineman's "punch" but that is not a bench press movement....if the DL is on an OL's body like a bench press, its over anyway.


Show me an offensive line technique that is reliant on the pectoral muscles and I will show you an unemployed coach.

Various Clean movements are the explosive measure of choice now...

Couldn't agree more... I would take a player with great power clean numbers and mediocre bench press numbers rather than the opposite. Cleans are the closest coaches and scouts can get to measuring explosiveness, and that is the most important thing in football. Take this guy for example who projects to be a DT. He must explode out of his stance to get penetration or drive the offensive linemen back, and he must explode his hips into tackles that he makes. Good tackling comes from rolling your hips through the ballcarrier/ exploding through him. The best way to meausure these skills (as I mentioned before) is through some type of clean...

From the Iowa site...OSU offered last week, joining Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He talks about what interests him in each school.

The article mentions he is 6-foot-2 264 lbs....much bigger than the 6-1 237 his profile lists.

For the mods... how does he compare to Lamarr Woodley? Similar size, but I am not sure about speed as I havn't seen anything concerning Mobley in that area?

Woodley was more of an outside guy who rushed the passer, Mobley will eventually grow into a DT and play around 300 lbs, but use his speed to shoot gaps and leverage of being 6'1'' to be able to get underneat the o-line.

Two totally different roles...

Without seeing film, it is hard to compare him to someone and how good he is, but due to his size and what he will probably grow into you might think of a guy like Warren sapp at 6'2'' 300 lbs...

Seems like he's built up a really strong relationship with the Iowa people... usually u wouldnt think an Iowa or Minnesota could really compete with OSU and Michigan's in recruiting... but this is the type of kid I could see shunning the big time schools and jumpin on board with the new coaching staff at Minnesota, or heading to Iowa cause they were the first team to really embrace him..

Way too early to say that...he hasn't developed a real relationship with anyone yet. Keep in mind that article was written by the Iowa Rivals outlet...of course it sounds like he has built a real relationship with them. But they also forgot to mention that Dick Tressel was in to see Willie recently.

Mobley and Woodley are nothing alike. Like cbf40 said, Woodley was better suited off the edge and was a LB in HS. Mobley is probably going to have a hand in the dirt for the rest of his football career. He is already 6-2 260 and could easily be a guy who plays at 280-290. He has decent speed for his size but to me he is a project. I don't yet see that freakish combination of size and speed like Quinn Pitcock when he was in HS.

Folks,

Mobley will receive a full-court press from "The U" - as Minnesota is known up here. The early word is that on the defensive side of the ball he is the recruit Brewster would like to hang his hat and point as say... "Stay in MN, we are building something special. Willie did." On the offensive side of the ball it is Floyd. Of course there are some of Floyd's teammates who are not two far behind these guys. Eden Prairie is a school with which Brewster really needs to connect. Mason alienated many parents and some in the EP program. We will be in a tough battle here. Just a little insight.

Early word in EP is that he really likes Minnesota. He is excited to get the "home team" going (think Tressel's recruiting class in 2002). It may also make it easier on his parents to be able to see him play: distance and money for travel.

At this point I would be surprised if he goes somewhere other than the U - as the refer to MN up here.

The new coach is busy visiting high schools and all the city groups/booster clubs etc that Mason ticked off. Again, think Tressel repairing relations w/ Ohio's HS coaches after Cooper was gone.
